Such optimal conditions can be readily achieved by storing papers in archival quality polyethylene bags and then storing the bagged papers in archival boxes. To enhance this double-level of protection the box then needs to be stored in a cool, dry environment such as a closet in an air-conditioned home. Avoid temperature and humidity extremes found in basements or attics - the rule of thumb is that if it is uncomfortable for you it will be uncomfortable for your stored newspapers. Archival Methods offer all-in-one kits to simplify newspaper and magazine storage. Do not "stress" newspapers by packing them tightly in the storage box.
Instead pack them rather loosely. Application Newsprint, by its very nature, is a poor candidate for long term preservation. It is manufactured at the lowest possible cost and contains acid, lignin and other impurities that are not conductive to long life. Yet there are things you can do. If the newspaper is of important historical or personal value, consider contacting a paper conservator who can neutralize some of the harmful impurities. This can be costly if you are doing more than a handful of clippings but such "deacidification" can enhance newsprint life.
More commonly, however, Archival Methods customers accept the fact that newspapers will yellow and get brittle over time and simply want to extend that time by properly storing their newspapers under optimal conditions.
