Do the keys actually light up or is it just a backlight?

They do indeed light up. I believe it is technically backlight from the bottom of the keys but it shines directly through the key caps to properly light up the etching on the keys. You can set the pattern and colors you want as well as adjust the brightness of the lighting. Hope this helps!
