The difference is only in packaging format and target market, not product age or formulation. The Kingpin Cooling KPx thermal compound is produced in different pack sizes for different distribution channels:

Retail version (like the 1g × 2 pack you saw):
Designed for end users and small builds. It includes two 1g syringes and application spatulas for convenience.
OEM / bulk version (such as 3g packaging):
Typically supplied to system integrators or manufacturers who prefer a single larger syringe for assembly efficiency and cost control.

Both versions contain the same thermal compound formulation. The product is not “old stock”—thermal paste has a long shelf life (typically several years when properly sealed and stored), and inventory is rotated regularly through production batches.

So the difference you noticed is purely packaging and distribution purpose, not freshness or quality.
