No battery on this unit. It gets it power to run from the heating system's 24 volt transformer.

Yes the display is back-lit. The back-light will turn on when a button is pressed and turn off after a short period of inactivity.

Specs say it automatically switches heat and cool.  Can you override to control switching from one to another by Smart Phone?

It says it does that, but I have yet to see it. I tested it by putting a high heat temp so that I know it would come on and left it on ac. Well it never switched, now doing it manual it worked. From the app you have all the functions like if you where at the control panel itself. I can adjust mine from anywhere in the world, I have it set also on a schedule that works great.

Can you set the on/off differential.  i.e. If away for an extended period, set heating to come on at 50° and off at say 57° to reduce the furnace cycling too much at a lower temperature ?

No, you cannot set the differential. However, consider this: Most furnaces have a low-fire and high-fire setting; the low-fire setting is used to maintain current temperature or bring temperature up slightly, while the high-fire setting is used to raise the temperature quickly. When you have a wide programmable thermostat differential, the furnace typically kicks in on low, but after a few minutes if it has not achieved the comfort temperature, it moves to high burn, which is less efficient. This means that a very wide differential on heating increases the percentage of heating accomplished by high burn, which increases overall gas usage. Another option is to program the thermostat with different temperatures at different times. Programming is very easy using their app.

I have separate heating and cooling systems (with 2 separate thermostats next to one another).  Can one of these thermostats control both systems?

This looks exactly like my American Standard thermostats.  Will it function properly as a pair for 2 zones system heat pump?

I'm not exactly sure what the second zone for your heat pump needs as inputs. If it takes standard thermostat inputs, then it should. If the system requires proprietary connections, then it will be an issue. Right now I have 2 thermostats in my house controlling two separate heating systems and it works great. There are no conflicts with naming the zones separately and controlling them via the Honeywell web app. What I can't answer is what the wiring on your zones need as inputs from your stats.
