Hi tech guys. I'm upgrading from an ASUS M4A78LT-M board (AMD Phenom) that still rocks.  If I just do a Board/Memory/CPU upgrade to my existing ATA drives and power supply, will I run into problems on startup?  I got the free Win7 to Win10/64 upgrade back when and want to be sure my Win10 will be recognized as valid and the OS won't freak out. What say you pros?

I am not a pro but an experienced user sometimes building my own PCs. One of my PCs had  ASUS M5A97 motherboard. I'll advise you not to plan just Board/Memory/CPU upgrade and retaining the ATA drive ( ATA drive? must be very old and very slow, and prone to fail within a few years).

There are something to consider:

1) If you look closely at picture of this board you can see it needs 8-pin PCI power connector input. My M5A97 had 6-pin inputs , and the power supply for that PC had 6-pin PCI power connector, so it was fine for my old PC but I could not use that old power supply to this ASUS Prime B560 motherboard. I ended up buying an EVGA 400 N1 100-N1-0400-L1 400W Power Supply from Newegg  (WOW ! today's price just $20, I cannot believe it), and that was perfect.

2) Win 10 upgraded  to your ATA drive cannot be used with this new board, as there are just too many hardware changes happened and Microsoft will expect you to get a new license.

Anyway, getting a legitimate license from third party vendors can be relatively cheap. The cheapest Win 10 Pro license that I got from a vendor was just USD $5, as a promotion to existing customer, and I am serious. Without the promotion, a typical license will be  $15-$40, still rather affordable unlike the typical OEM retail price of $160. Download the latest Win 10 from Microsoft and then activate with the license and you are good to go.

On my new ASUS Prime B560  build , I used a 14 year old PC case, and that was still very good.

I have the Western Digital WD BLACK SN750 NVMe M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express 3.0 The PCI 4.0 express slot does not recognize the drive. Is there an option in the bios to get this to work or does it not make any difference in terms of performance?

This motherboard has one PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot and one PCIe 3.0 M.2 slot. To achieve gen 4 M.2 NVMe SSD performance (7,000 MB/s read) you must have 11th generation Intel CPU and using that PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot to get that.

Since the WD SN750 Black is a PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD, it will not be recognized at the PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot. However, you can use it at the PCIe 3.0 M.2 slot  and still get something close to 3,400 MB/s read, that is the spec of the WD SN750 Black, you cannot achieve PCIe 4.0 speed anyway. Nothing in the BIOS can improve performance for  your gen 3 drive.

If you are using 11th generation Intel CPU with this board, I'll suggest getting a WD SN 850, a gen 4 drive, and use it at the PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot to achieve 7,000 MB/s read. I have a review about WD SN 850 here at Newegg on 7/14/21, maybe you can find some helpful info there.
