For a class, I have some sort of ATX tower that I have to upgrade (on paper). How do I find out which motherboards are compatible, if I need to find one that fits the most up-to-date CPU?

Most ANY mid side tower (that's what this one is) can hold either ATX or AT form factor motherboards. those are about 99% of the boards you get when you build a PC. There are a few other "special" type of boards like ITX which are really small form factor and some Older boards (like 1990's) that were bigger (cant remember those form factors sorry) But for your class and for a "normal" PC then just about any NON COMPACT case will be able to handle whatever board you buy. Lastly there are 2 brands of "up to date cpu's" one is AMD and the other is INTEL. both use boards made for those type of chips but again the boards are still ATX size :) good luck!
