The award winning Define R3 combines minimalistic yet elegant styling with extraordinary performance, noise reduction features, premium build quality and unparalleled value in this price range. This mid-tower case is a great choice for everything from gaming/enthusiast systems to silent home theater and corporate applications. The R3 comes pre-fitted with dense noise absorbing bitumen material on the front, top and side panels. The exclusive ModuVent System provides three 5.5”X 5.5” panels which also have noise absorbing material; these panels can be removed to expose three air vents for additional fans for high air flow applications. Rubber padding on the case feet, and anti-vibration pads for the power supply and HDDs also help reduce noise.

The cleverly designed, (8) white HDD trays, with black silicone mounting grommets, can be used for 3.5” HDDs or SSDs. The spacious sleek black interior can support graphic cards up to 290 mm and CPU coolers up to 165mm high. If cooling becomes more of a priority, this system can support up to 7 fans with removable filters to provide airflow from 5 sides of the case. The case also includes several rubber grommeted routing holes and extended cable space behind the M/B mounting plate which allow for efficient cable management. The bottom of the case has a filter over the power supply which can be easily removed for cleaning.

It's easy to see why this case has won so many awards; the attention to detail, clever design, high-performance features, understated yet elegant style, quality workmanship, and unparalleled value, put the Define R3 in a class of its own.

Pros: This case is great, stylish, what more would you want?
Looks "fresh" compared to other cases with weird lights, and designs.
Has an option for up to 7 fans!
My gtx 580 fits fine! Adding another soon.
I would recommend this case for anybody looking for a nice "simple" case.

Cons: None

Overall Review: It would be nice if it had more fans, but hey! For the price this is great!

Overall Nice Case 10/4/2011 2:01:28 AM

Pros: Fairly well constructed. Lots of fans and easy to build in. Excellent cable management system. Looks sleek and modern. Fan controller is nice addition. Lots of HD trays. Quiet as long as you have quiet components as well. Plenty of airflow.

Cons: What the engineers were thinking on having the case slide into place via 4 notches each on bottom and top like an old school case is beyond me. Can get very frustrating on trying to line up the notches to close the case. Rubber grommets pop out very easily. A little piece already broke off the front inside of the case.

Overall Review: The $19.99 shipping is brutal to pay. Don' t know why no one else carries this case in the US. The case would be an excellent value at 99.99. But $130 because of shipping puts this case slightly at a disadvantage for its price range. For a few bucks more you can start getting into the higher quality build type of cases. Would I suggest it at its current price on NewEgg, probably not. If shipping becomes free or case is a $110 total price point then yes.

compromised design 9/24/2011 1:43:16 PM

Pros: Large enough for full ATX mb and 8x3.5" drives, plus 2x5.25" bays. Top front power switch, headphone and mic jacks, 2x USB 2 jacks, and eSATA jack are easy to reach if the case is on the floor. Bottom-mounted PS has removable screen over the bottom intake and PS airflow doesn't mix with rest of case. Side panels, top, and inside of front door lined with foam rubber to dampen sound reflections. Front door has magnetic latch.

Cons: No USB 3 or 1394a or audio line-in jacks, no reset button and no HD indicator LED on top front panel. Expansion cards do not fit well because rear of case is a little too far away from MB. Bottom fan location is unusable with all but the shortest power supplies. Side panels rattle unless one pries up some of the fingers along the edges. My left side panel, the one with a fan location, was bowed; it either pops in or out, and in practice ends up bowed in. 3.5" HDDs mount to metal trays with rubber grommet isolation, but 2.5" drives can only mount directly to the tray, and the trays themselves can rattle in their cage. Must have both side panels off to install drives. Front fan "filters" are merely coarse screens, and four screws must come out to remove filters. Case has 7 possible fan locations, comes with 2 fans, but only blocks off 3 of the unused locations, leaving 2 fan locations to be blocked or filled with a fan. Not possible to move front door hinge from left side to right.

Overall Review: Is this a quiet case? A 7 fan gamer case? It can't be both but it tries. If you want a gamer case with a bunch of fans spinning away there are better and prettier choices. As a quiet case it is a good start, but needs to have the unused fan locations and some gratuitous ventilation holes blocked in order to control airflow. With just a few extra touches this would be a great quiet case.

Pros: I love the layout and the overall look of the case. Just a few feet away and I can't even hear the system running, and there's enough room to work comfortably without the case taking up half my room.

Cons: Had to RMA the first one as it arrived with a shattered foot, a screw somehow lodged behind the liner of the case, and all four screws holding the side panels were inserted so tight that they had ruined the case around them.

New Egg overnighted another one to me which came with the same problem on the screws, but not bad enough to spend more time sending it back. The case has done its job other than that.

Amazing Case 8/15/2011 12:48:40 PM

Pros: Good construction, great condition. Hard drive cages work wonderfully. Very quiet with 6 fans installed. Is keeping my CPU amazingly cool. Easy installation of all components and a very good collection of installation screws and such.

Cons: The original fans are a bit on the noisy side, but not too bad. The rubber moldings around the motherboard cutouts do come off very easily, but they are relatively easy to put back on.

Great Case! 8/10/2011 8:14:43 PM

Pros: - Using this for my ESXi 4.1 build due to the 8 3.5 drive bays and low cost of the case.

- Good quality case
- Dust filters on the front and bottom fans
- Quiet
- Lots of 3.5 drive bays with rubber sound dampening

Cons: - Side panel latches can be a pain to put back in the metal grooves.

Overall Review: - Adding top fans increases noise, but that's to be expected.

Great Case for the Money 7/5/2011 3:39:38 PM

Pros: Great case, nice finish, plenty of cable management options, plenty of fan mounting options, quiet. The filters for the fans work quite well.

Cons: My case came with minor damage on one of the rear corners. This damage wasn't from shipping, as it's one of the places that's well protected from damage by the packaging. I assume it's from assembly, which means Fractal should have a look at their QA division.

Overall Review: The sound insulation will bump up video and cpu temperatures, especially under load, which then causes your fans to run faster thus creating more noise. Overall, it's a minor issue that's easily ignored for me. If you have cats, the placement of the power button on the top of the case might be an issue. Some may also complain of the lack of an HDD LED or the inability to hinge the front door on the right side of the case.
Also, I despise blue LED's, but that's a personal problem.

Fractal Design R3 5/23/2011 1:15:13 PM

Pros: Plenty of 3.5 bays -- 8 in total. There is room for two fans at the front of the case to provide airflow directly to these drives, with one fan included. The drives are lined up in a way that provides excellent air flow. I went from a Cooler Master Cosmos case to this and my drive temps dropped from 60c+ to 38-43. While the cosmos case is a little sexier, this one is way more practical, especially for so many drives (8x2tb)
The case is very sturdy and rigid compared to some of the other cases I've used.
It is very quiet and Fractal Designs have added quite a bit to aid in sound dampening (foam covers for unused fan slots, foam covered sides, rubber grommets on the drive mounts etc)
The case is primarily tooless.
The cable management is quite nice.

Cons: Only comes with one front fan--but most people won't be mounting all 8 drives, so this shouldn't effect them much.
I would have appreciated another 1/8 to 1/4 inch of space between the motherboard plate and the back side, just to provide a bit more room for the cables. It can be a tight fit when you have so many SATA cables and whatnot.

Overall Review: Great case. It isn't super flashy, but I like that. I got it primarily because I wanted something with 8x 3.5 bays that would keep the drives acceptably cool. I usually go with Lian Li or coolermaster, but this case fit the bill better than any of those for this particular function.
