Yes, Sata 3 cables just guarantee they can handle the higher speeds, but they are all backward compatible to sata 1

It all depends upon the interface on the CD/DVD. I presume you mean an internal 5.25" optical drive. If it's SATA, then it will work, if your DVD has an older interface it will not. Just confirm that your DVD drive has the same type of 7 pin socket as the plug on the end of the cable in the picture. Your drive should also say Sata or possibly eSata. Either will work with this cable. If it is not compatible, get a CD/DVD writer for less than $15 from Newegg. Cheers.

Sata 3 transfer speeds are up to 6GBps
Sata 2 Transfer Speeds are up to 3GBps

GBps is Gigabytes per second.

Cable connections are the same, but quality may be different.   I would connect a sata 3 cable connect sata 2 drive to a Sata 2 controller, but not the inverse because your speed may be limited.

What is the difference between Left Angle and Right angle SATA cables? and when would I need to use each?

It can largely depend on how your SATA slots are configured on your board. Sometimes, they get in the way of PCIe devices such as GPUs that are added in later. Sometimes , you case can be a factor in what cable you need. I have an ASUS Maximus Hero VII so the SATA connectors are parallel with the board and facing out as you look at the board so I could not use the angled connectors on that end as the angles would get in the way of each other. Also, consider how the cable attaches to the actual device. Cable management is really important to some people and they want their cables to be ran very neatly in their cases to improve, looks, cooling and air flow, and access to the hardware if work is needed inside the case at some point so the cables are not in the way. I can say it worked fine with my Samsung 840 Pro 256GB 2.5" SATA III SSD. I don't think the packaging between the 840 and 850 series is any different so it should work fine.

My MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard has the SATA connectors stacked on the edge, 2 connectors each in 3 piles. Would I be able to use one of these cables in each slot, or will the cable from the bottom one (since it would be angled up) block the top connector?
My reason for wanting the left-angle connector is that the ports have less than an inch clearance from the hard drive cages so if I can't use the left angled connectors in all the slots, I have to remove the mobo from the case just to change out the SATA cables.

You can use 1 straight, 1 90 degree but not both 90 degree cables.

No, you can plug them in either way it makes no difference. The reason I bought these was they offer more flexibility for cable management. Sometimes I find that the 90 degree angle works better attached to the motherboard rather hand the drive.
