For the 2nd M.2 slot should a after market heatsink be used since one does not come with the 2nd slot?

It's not necessary to use a heatsink at all on an M.2 drive, especially if it's PCIe 3.0. PCIe 4.0 does run a bit hotter, but if you have adequate airflow in the case, you  won't notice any performance loss. Only worry might be a slightly shorter lifespan. All of that said, you certainly could use an aftermarket heat sink if you want to.

Question 2

Can x570 amd motherboards support AMD Ryzen 2700x AM4?

Yes it will work but you won't get the maximum Memory speeds supported by the board nor will you get PCIe 4.0. But those features will work once the CPU is upgraded in the future. Hope this helps.

Question 3

This really has a fan on the south bridge?  Seems like a step backwards, and in my experience, prone to failure.

It was necessary due to the new Chipset power draw and heat output. 14w iirc vs like 6 on older boards. Mine has been find so far since I bought it last year. No idea how it'll hold up over 5 years though.

Question 4

For memory, I keep reading that these motherboards max out at 3200 but the specs say 3600.  Does anyone know what the top RAM speed is, and why the reports of 3200 cap?

3600 speeds will work for sure in this as long as you are running a 3rd or the upcoming 4th gen Ryzen chip. I have 4x8 GB of Patriot Viper Steel 3600 running with no issues on a 3700X. I was able to boost those further to 3733, but saw no noticeable performance gain so I reduced them back to spec. If you aren't running 3rd or 4th gen Ryzen, I would look for a cheaper board, like a b450 if you can find one.

Question 5

Do you have to use both the 4 pin and 8 pin power connectors or just one?

PER ASUS SUPPORT: Under normal conditions It is NOT required that the 4-pin connector be powered:

"Thank you for contacting ASUS Product Support.
 [...] the other 4-pin is just a supporting power for CPU. If you're not going to overclock the CPU, it will run fine if only the 8-pin EATX power connector is plugged in."

So...you don't really need that new PSU with its two EATX connectors, unless you're going to be doing some serious overclocking or otherwise running your CPU at its limits; and if planning to overclock, you've probably already bought a shiny new PSU anyway :)   You *can* buy 8-to-8+8 power cable adapters, but think about that a moment--your old PSU still won't be able to deliver more power to the mobo thru its single 8-pin connector.

There will be a bunch of people buying new PSUs they don't need  :(

Question 6

Besides the CPU heatsink, how many case fans would this motherboard support?

There are a total of 5 fan headers that can be used with 3 or 4 pin fans and speed control through BIOS. One is the designated CPU fan header, one can be used for a second CPU fan or a chassis fan, and 3 are designated for chassis fans.

If you are using PWM fans the headers can easily handle 2 fans each with splitters, so two CPU and 8 Chassis fans total.

I've been running 6x120mm chassis fans and 1x 120mm fan on my CPU cooler with no issues.

There is also a designated AIO pump header that looks like a fan header but is always at full power.

Will an AM3 AIO water block fit this or are the holes different?

I can't figure out if the X570 chipset includes a GPU, or if I'll need a separate graphics card.  Any advice?

No, gpu is not a part of any motherboard. Some CPU's have integrated graphics, but generally you will need a graphics card for games. If you want to play at reasonable resolution and settings.

Question 9

When using M.2 drives, do the bios disable certain SATA ports? I'm looking at this board, trying to spec a build.

I personally have this board and have not gotten additional storage drives to connect to any of the SATA ports.  I have 2 PCIe m.2 drives (500 GB WD Blue and 1 TB WD Black) and have contacted support.  I sent the board in but they returned it (the same board) and it did the same exact thing.  This also happens on my ASUS Pro WS X570-ACE, so I'm not sure why I can't plug in additional HDDs.

Do both M.2 sockets support PCIe4?

Yes! As this is an X570 motherboard, all PCIe lanes on this board support PCIe 4.0. The top M.2 slot shares PCIe lanes from the CPU with the top PCIex16 slot (where you would normally slot a GPU). It also possibly shares with the X4 lane beside he CMOS battery as well, though I am unclear as I do not have a trace map for the board. Overall though, the top M.2 shares 20 PCIe lanes with the top PCIex16 slot, giving you 4 for your SSD and 16 for the GPU. The bottom M.2 slot receives it's PCIe lanes from the X570 Chipset instead of the CPU, but they are still PCIe 4.0. I am unsure how many PCIe lanes are provied from the chipset to the remaining PCIe slots, as ASUS has the liberty to designate the 24 PCIe lanes that come from the chipset to any combination of USB, SATA, PCIe, etc.

TL;DR - Both of the M.2. slots are PCIe 4.0 x4.
