Would this board support an i5 1155 type out of the box?

Not sure about the "out of the box" aspect but in September 2015 I moved an Intel i5-2400 (socket type LGA1155) from a failed motherboard to the stated motherboard with no issues. I selected that particular motherboard because the specs stated it had a compatible chip set to continue to use the embedded graphics support in the Intel i5-2400 processor.  This processor switch was in the Windows 10 environment and no re-installation of Windows 10 was needed even though it was a motherboard change.  It took Windows 10 three boots before it finally had all the drivers in place but it worked.  But I did need to call Microsoft on the phone to get Windows 10 software license "reactivated" due to the motherboard hardware change.

Question 2

My brother wants to update to a GTX 970 from a vastly smaller, stock GPU. His CPU utilizes this socket but his current board BIOS freezes up when trying to assimilate the GTX 970. Would this board operate well with a GTX 970 or does he need to upgrade his CPU as well?

I suggest that you go to Intel's website. Check Compatibility they let you compare using the board or the processor. I chose this board for the 4 memory slots and compatibility with a processor I have laying around and cost and brand. I haven't received the board yet but am hopeful it will work well. Not all processors that fit this socket work with all the chipsets so definitely check Intel's support site before any purchase.

Yes but be careful which processor you buy. Check Intel's compatibility chart.

What kind of monitor should I use with this board ?

Depends if you plan on using the onboard graphics or adding your own video card. The onboard support DVI and DisplayPort output, so anything that takes one of those as input will work with no additional components needed. Recommend a 16:9 ratio (widescreen) monitor to show the best resolution of modern graphics devices but other than that you have a lot of choices.
