Pretty close to my idea of the perfect board.

Pros: This board has everything that you could want in a board. Well, nearly, but we'll get into that later. This board is well built. The armor is a fantastic addition to the PCIe slots. I don't know if they truly help but it gives you some extra peace of mind. It has Thunderbolt 3 support straight out of the box, given you install the drivers (use the website, not the disc).
Gigabytes inclusion of support for a 5050 REG LED strip was a great addition to the board. You are buying the flagship board so you expect to get some flagship features. The nice part of the LED support is that control is integrated into the software you will already be installing, or if you choose not to, you have control in the BIOS. It beats the pants off of something like NZXT where you pay $80 for a controller and 2 itty bitty little strips then pay another $30 if you want 2 more of those short things. This board will power 2 meters of 5050 strip, a little over 6 feet.
The front I/O header clip was a good thought to try to make things easier for install. I moved to this board from a Gigabyte X99P-SLI, and while the two boards are very similar in operation, I have no regrets in buying this board for the extra features and bells and whistles. I had a black and white build going and had a few blue wires and ram that I was about to replace, but the black , white and blue in the board brought everything together and it all looks sharp.

Cons: The main gripe I have with this board is the location of the M.2 slot. It is under the white piece that goes across the board. You have to remove your video card if you need to access that in the future. No big deal. Except when you are water cooling. You have to drain the system to pull your GPU out to acess the slot. I left my cover off, but there is still not enough room to pull the M.2 drive out.
Second is, since I left my cover off, you can see the green PCB wifi card against my black PCB motherboard.
It could use a 2 or so more USB 3.0 or 3.1 ports on the back.
My last complaint is that Gigabyte advertises that you can expand your Thunderbolt 3/USB 3.1 with the addition of the GC-Alpine Ridge add-in that would utilize a header on the motherboard that is apparently not available in the U.S.A. and I have yet to find any way to purchase it.

Other Thoughts: My first and second cons could most likely be fixed if Gigabyte would swap where the wifi module goes, It would hide it enough (especially when behind an air cooled GPU) that it wouldn't be noticeable and the user would have much easier access to the M.2 SSD.
The BIOS is nicely updated and easy to use. The new interface that they have moved to made bios navigation a little more exciting.
I wish the board had 2 M.2 SSD slots to go along with the 2 U.2. There is such a large selection of M.2 based PCIe SSD's now that it would make sense to have 2 of those slots. but with the U.2 interface being used by only intel at this time, and the 750 series being so pricey that I couldn't imagine having 2 U.2 drives, though I'm sure someone does and has them in raid 0 blowing the doors of the building with it's stupid ridiculous speeds.
Overall, I would recommend this board if you have the money for it. If you are looking to get something like the NZXT lighting, get it all in one here (except for the strip that you can get 5 meters for $13 on the interwebs) without throwing more junk in your case (I'm lookin at you thermaltake and your controllers for the rgb riing fans).

Pros: Its made by a reputable company
looks good
nice design
DID NOT require a firmware update for my intel I70-6950x

Cons: There are only a few small things and I will list them here:

Did not notice in the specs but there is no esata and I do have 2 esata devices
will get a controller or usb adapter (extra cost)
Bluetooth is a pain to get driver installed properly
Could have a few more usb port on the back plain

Other Thoughts: I would like to have this board with water blocks on it
like the 1366 sock UD7 board

Best x99 Refresh Motherboard

Pros: - tremendous PCIe flexibility
- support for simultaneous M.2 and U.2 drives
- clean UEFI with intuitive options and controls
- good physical component layout on board (i.e., position and spacing of key slots)
- quality components with robust construction
- board worked properly on the first try; no drama with memory of BIOS

Cons: - M.2 location is not ideal
- mouse support in BIOS is laggy
- insufficient number of rear USB ports

Other Thoughts: Through a series of odd events, this happens to be the fourth x99 refresh board I've worked with in the past two months. After helping a friend with his build, I can compare this board to the ASUS Rampage V Edition 10, EVGA x99 FTW K, and ASUS Deluxe II; in this regard, the Gigabyte x99 Designare EX was definitely most impressive board of the bunch. The ASUS boards had odd BIOS and compatibility issues (e.g., Intel MEI not installing, SATA drives not detecting as AHCI, poor onboard audio, bloatware, etc), not to mention unacceptably slow boot times, and the EVGA board, while working properly, didn't have a PCIe 2.0 x1 slot where I needed it.

I selected the Designare EX because it was the only board that can support two GPUs in SLI with full x16 bandwidth while driving an M.2 SSD and a PCIe sound card. The latter is generally the sticking point, as the vast majority of boards now hide the PCIe 2.0 x1 slot under a primary GPU slot, which makes it impossible to properly use the sound card. Surprisingly, the ASUS Deluxe II has the M.2 port sharing resources with the second GPU slot, which in theory means SLI performance will be degraded. This board can manage that while supporting M.2 and U.2 drives without any loss of capability! In this way, I can keep my Samsung 950 Pro and upgrade to a U.2 drive in the future without compromise.

It's also worth noting that the Designare EX worked properly on the very first boot and has continued to provide a seamless experience. The WiFi even worked before I had an opportunity to load the drivers, which was quite impressive. For reference, neither of the ASUS boards could manage this feat. Overclocking has similarly been quite intuitive, and I'm able to obtain 4.4 GHz w/ a 6850k at 1.36V by only adjusting three or four settings in the BIOS.

I am truly satisfied with this purchase, and I highly recommend it over the aforementioned ASUS boards. I'm so happy with this purchase, that I will likely become a full convert to Gigabyte motherboards in the future.

Dirty tricks for memory overclock

Pros: Looks good, IO shield is decent quality, fully featured board without needing EATX or extra power headers.

Cons: Memory only hits 3600 buy disabling 2 memory channels! Speeds above 3200 are done with a multiplier and lowering the DMI clock, meaning that "3333+" proudly shown on the box actually nets you lower overall bandwidth than at 3200.

BIOS menus are painfully slow to navigate, Gigabyte software suite is a performance hog.

I wish I knew before I bought, but, this has a PLX chip despite plenty of PCIE lanes from the CPU. What a waste. Yet, despite this, my PCIE NVME card was very particular about which slot it had to be in before it would work. Engineering fail.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking at this, you want a premium motherboard that will push the limits of what's possible. This board isn't it, look elsewhere.

Pros: Gigabyte really delivered on this board by providing many new to market features. Two USB 3.1 ports, a Type-A and a Type-C, are integrated on the back panel. With the advent of smartphone manufacturers transitioning over to USB3 Type-C connectors, these ports are a welcome addition especially with the added bonus that it supports outputting up to 36 watts of power. Also present is a DisplayPort In connection. Connecting a DisplayPort cable from a video card to the DisplayPort In allows for the use of USB 3.1 Type-C displays.

Although the specs on this site indicate a 128Gb maximum supported memory, the Gigabyte GA-X99-Designare EX rev 1.0 will handle up to 256Gb! To reach this feat, Registered DIMMs must be utilized. Unfortunately, the board won't support ECC resulting in Registered RAM operating in non-ECC mode.

Other bonuses on this motherboard include the generous helping of three PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots (with support for both flavors of multi-video card platforms), a M.2 connector (for those physically tiny SSDs), dual GbE ports with support for teaming, and user controllable lighting.

The BIOS also contains some very flexible settings to allow for fine-grain changes. Overclocking was a breeze and reminded me of the time I spent with a DFI motherboard. The dual BIOS made bringing the device back to life, when I was a little overzealous with the overclocking, a snap!

Cons: Beware! The GA-X99-Designare EX is very picky with RAM. Yes, the order of populating the DIMM slots counts and such but I'm referring to general DIMM overclockability with non-tested memory. I started out with a random set of four matching 2666 DDR4 sticks taken out of another PC. These worked fine at stock motherboard timings on this Gigabyte board but kicking in the XMP profiles for the 2666Mhz speed resulted in a wide range of problems ranging from random app crashes to Windows 10 reboots. Hard coding the timings and frequency did not solve the issue. Luckily, I had ordered a pack of four DDR4 3200 sticks recently and they just so happened to be on the compatibility chart available on Gigabyte's website where my original set wasn't. These performed like a champ even when utilizing the 3200Mhz XMP profile.

If you're looking to run 256Gb of RAM with this Gigabyte motherboard, the Memory Compatibility Chart only has two options as of the writing of this review.

The list of PCI Express slots that will decrease in bandwidth if 'x' is used is longer than most. Robbing one slots bandwidth to use another port is a downside of having a large amount of bandwidth intensive connections and it is made painfully apparent here.

The BIOS was a bit sluggish when navigating or selecting different categories. Although the new beta BIOS available on the Gigabyte website seemed to help, it still has some growing room to fit in with the X99 crowd in this range.

Other Thoughts: I'm impressed with everything Gigabyte was able to add to this motherboard while still retaining stability, less the RAM situation. Hopefully future BIOS updates will further improve the memory compatibility. Gigabyte has several marketing docs showing an add in Thunderbolt card but it doesn't appear to be available as of yet.

Solid Performing albeit pricey X99 board

Pros: -USB type C
-Supports M.2
-Great Overclocking features
-Even supports thunderbolt 3
-3 way video support
-Dual Intel GigE Nics
-Easy to get up and running quickly with an intuitive layout for most cases

Cons: -Integrated wifi seems below this kind of board. It would have been nice if it had been an optional chip piggybacking on the motherboard so that it could be replaced.
-BIOS interface is sluggish
-Could use more USB 3.0 ports
-Missing onboard POST code display
-The price is really high for what seems like only a few extras and some flashy plastic

Other Thoughts: -A solid but expensive board. If you are looking for a new motherboard to "futureproof" your machine (as much as one can these days) this should do you quite well.

-The lack of the POST code display that I have come to expect on X99 boards is a large setback. It would be nice to see that make a comeback in later versions of this board.

-The 3-way Crossfire/SLI at 16x is pretty cool and works very well. If that is the only reason you are buying this board I am sure there are better valued boards that have the same relative features.

-They knocked it out of the part with the heatsink design.

Sturdy and lots of features

Pros: - Reinforced PCIE and RAM slots for increased durability
- PCIE slot lock tabs separate from slot instead of breaking off
- Supports overclocking with Broadwell-E processors
- Double BIOS prevents inexperienced overclockers from breaking their system
- Support for M.2 NVMe drives
- Customizable RGB lighting
- Wireless 802.11ac antenna is fast

Cons: - Some apps in App Center are useless or redundant
- BIOS overclock settings have to be typed in, leaving a possibility for error and component damage

Excellent motherboard with options to spare (a few nits too)

Pros: - Dizzying array of features
- USB type C
- Latest M.2 offering
- Overclocking features
- Thunderbolt 3 support (see cons)
- The ability to update/upgrade BIOS via "Q-Flash" without the CPU (or memory) being present. This is a *VERY* slick scenario. In the past, various boards required a specific CPU and/or you couldn't update the BIOS to support a newer/better CPU - unless you had an older/lesser CPU. This removes that entire issue. To this one point, you could run into any issue, be able to unplug/disconnect CPU/RAM/various cards and still be able to perform an upgrade of the BIOS (especially if it's some form of compatibility fix).
- M2 to U2 adapter is available (see other). Enables running NVMe (2.5”) via the M.2 port. (Recommend just moving to an SM961 series device instead)
- Would highly recommend this board to anyone who is looking for a well-rounded, high caliber setup.

Cons: - Integrated WiFi for a motherboard of this caliber almost seems like a "step down". Considering the horsepower that this thing can produce… Single gigabit ethernet might even be considered slow. Would have preferred WiFi as an "option", but include Bluetooth. There are 1300Mbps WiFi APs, thus for such a flagship motherboard - there should be a matching inclusion (if included).
- BIOS interface is not always snappy.
- There’s no thunderbolt 3 card available for this motherboard. Located a note that it may be a ‘certification issue’. So, while the motherboard may be capable (and advertised as supporting) - this feature is currently unavailable.

Other Thoughts: - Overclocking with higher end CPU requires some serious cooling. Expect to use a liquid cooler.
- If using a heavily populated motherboard (cards/M.2), your PCIe16 slots will all be operating at x8. May not be an issue, depending on use.
- Make sure that the selected CPU for the system build is one that supports 40 PCIe lanes (not 28), check the Intel ARK site ( to determine what CPU works for your expected build (see high end desktop CPUs).
- Would like to have seen a dedicated port for NVMe drive. Even two ports would have been good. The M2 to U2 adapter can add noise to the signal (given speeds and data throughput), that could create data corruption.
