Can you install air cooler on it? I am thinking how I will test my components before water cooling them

i am sure you can.Enermax and thermaltake have some very interesting looking and good performing air coolers.I too wanted to check air cooling  out for myself but the kaybelake cpu did not come with basic fan so i had no choice but to go all out waterlooping.The waterblock that comes with this board does perform very well,the temperatures in idle are running between 28 and 35 degrees and slightly higher when gaming.But i know i can do a little bit better if i change the cpu greese on this water block i don't think i put enough.But if i were you i would not go the air rout.This board can handle watercooling very well.no need to test just go for it and you won't regret it.Good luck dude.

Question 2

Overview says no wifi, bet specs says it has wifi. Can someone verify? I'm sure it does, but overview threw me off.

The motherboard itself supports Wi-Fi through the use of a little antennae like box that magnetically snaps onto your case and connects to the motherboard via some dedicated connector ports. I believe this feature is available on quite a few of the more recent Asus motherboards and it appears to be identical to them.

Question 3

Does this motherboard work with 7th gen i7 7700k? Also do you need to use water cooling or could you switch out with a fan?

Unfortunately liquid cooling is required. Stay away from aluminum or corrosion will occur. This motherboard is compatible with both 6th and 7th generation CPU processors. I hope this helps! My build I originally didn’t plan full watercolor  and then Asus told me it had to be liquid cooled. Therefore my build has taken over a year to slowly procure all the necessary parts. My build is sitting at about $3500 now due to the full loop custom liquid-cooling solution. Best of luck to you!

why is there a tape drive on the motherboard?

LOL...that's funny. Those are the in/out hose ports for a liquid cooling system if you intend to use the included water-block. The hoses attach to a separate radiator (not included) for circulating water/coolant to keep the Intel i7 chip at it's coolest temp.

Having trouble finding this on even ASUS's product page....
But does anyone know if the Monoblock is made from Copper or Aluminum? When it comes to DIY water cooling setups, you don't want to mix.

Seems we are getting conflicting answers. Aluminum.. Copper.. I contacted ASUS Customer support a while back and got the answer of "As I researched on our database and other resources, I had found out that the monoblock is made out of Alloy steel."

Additionally, if it is nickel coated anything, don't use "silver kill coil" strips.. since apparently this does not react well with nickel coated metals and can cause damage.

can the processor on the Maximus IX Extreme be fan cooled or does it have to be liquid?

Several other ROG boards can do the same functions and air cool.  I see no reason to buy this board unless you are planning to liquid cool it -- which is it is designed for specifically.  Check out the formula or hero versions if you want the ability to do air cooling too. . . However, I would say, that the monoblock on this board is awesome, and worth at least 250$ american on its own.  Go for the hero or forumlat ROG boards if you want to air cool IMHO.  Otherwise, buy this if you are thinking of liquid.

Question 7

There are no usb 2.0 on the rear so can you get into the bios with a usb 3.0 kb or do you have to use a ps2 kb to get into the bios?  Normally the usb 3.0 drivers do not get loaded in time.  thank you

I am afraid I do not fully understand the question.  The USB 3.0 ports on the back (or front) are fully backward compatible  with USB 2.0.  I downloaded the latest BIOS to a USB 2.0 memory stick, inserted it into the 3.0 port on the back, and updated the BIOS without any problems.

Probably is a dumb question but will this board accept my  Intel Core i7-6700K 8M Skylake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz LGA 1151 Processor?

This will absolutely run a 6700 K.  Love the board so far, just beware, this is a tuner's board and not just plug-and-play. Using a EKWB custom cooling circuit  and Rosewill B2 Spirit case I have a silent and sweet setup. I have an attempted a custom liquid circuit yet -- until this.  I took a few days to set it up right. The only thingsI wish I knew before I started, I was (1) the ROG extreme block has G1/4 fitting threads and (2) the EATX power plug on the board does require cabling on the front (by case) side of the board so make sure your case has room. Otherwise, it has worked beautifully.

Question 9

Is the cooling liquid pump a part of the cooling system on this board, or do I still need a separate cooling pump?

The mb includes only the water block. You still need the pump, reservoir, rad and tubing. Oh, and the fittings to connect the pieces.
