Motherboards - AMD

Comments: I bought this motherboard about 4 months ago along with an Athlon XP 1700+. Starting off everything worked fine, but after about a month the bios started developing alzheimers (losing date, time, and configurations). From there everything kinda went down hill, till one day the motherboard just wouldn't boot at all. On a positive note, Newegg ROCKS!! Newegg sent me the replacement, K7S5A Pro.

Comments: Looks like a few ppl have had probs, but ive built and upgraded 6 machines based on this board and never had a hiccup out of any of them ever, way way better than Via based boards ive fought with. Had the oldest board in a home system with a 1600+ running at 150 mhz stable with the cheeop oc bios, but this isnt really an OC board. Using half a gig of pc133 (2*256 cheap simple tech)that runs fine at 150, 64 meg gf4 4200, WD800JB and a sb live 5.1 and getting 10500 on 3Dmark 2k1. Oh yhea and an enlight 300w PS too. NOt bad and very stable for a sub-$500 machine. Will go with an Nforce2 board next but for the price the k7s5a has done me right.

Comments: I dislike these motherboards.... a lot! I bought 2 a while back. 1 for me and 1 for my wife. 1 was DOA- never posted, never nuthin... took a good look w/ a magnifying glass and found cold solder joints around FSB, found scorch marks and discoloring around USB connection. Battery was dead, so I replaced it w/ new- guess what? nuthin. My wife's posted, I ran and flashed BIOS, installed XP, and subsequently lost the AGP on FSB. Upon closer inspection I found discolored solder joints on AGP slot. I installed an old 16 bit pci video card, finished XP install, and went to newegg and ordered my 2 BIostars, which I'm really happy with. These boards are really the worst thing I"ve ever experienced. I know many people have had great luck with them, but I cannot forgive a company that can't keep its asembly equipment clean enough to prevent cold solder joints. These 2 board had serial #s indicating different weeks off assembly and different plants (per ECS), So I dunno..... ECS=bad experience

Comments: This board worked GREAT...for the first six months (If I had rated it then, it would get a 5!). One day, it just didn't turn on. Fans spinning, but no beeps, no monitor signals...nothing. I thought the processor was fried, so I purchased another, and it looked good, for the first two times I booted. Now I'm back to the same blank screeen when I turn it on. I've replaced the P/S, reset the CMOS, changed the RAM, pulled the board to electrically isolate it...nada. When you've replaced every other component, you know it's the board. I'm buying another, anything not built by ECS...and hoping my processor isn't fried.

Comments: Picked up my K7S5A from NewEgg refurb. 35.00 and free shipping! I recieved a retail Board with the box, cables and Manual. Im running an 1800+ with one stick of Kingmax TBGA 133 SDRAM. The machine runs great, no lost cmos or any other problems I've been reading about. Best deal I've had in a while :)

Comments: Well, the board is great in Windows, but I have had some trouble with it. It is faster than the KT133 board I used to have by a bit, even with SDRAM, and with DDR, it is lots better. I have unfortunately had the lost CMOS issue. This is a nuisance, but it is easy to deal with by resetting the bios again, but I plan to try the resistor fix soon. As far as I know, it is the only board with so much room around the AGP slot. That is great. I modded my Geforce 4 so much that it only fits in my board.

Comments: I bought this mobo almost 2 years ago back in August of 2001 (started off with a Duron 750, 256 MB PC100 Ram, Riva TNT2) now I upgraded the system many times since then (Duron 900, 512 MB PC133 Ram, Geforce2MX, Geforce 2 GTS) and now it's running off a Athlon XP2000+, 512 MB PC2100 Ram, Geforce4 Ti4200 and it's still running great. I had a 1,000 3DMark2001 Rating when I first got this mobo and almost 2 years later I have a 3DMark2001 rating of 10,500 with the same motherboard! Other components went and dissappeared but this motherboard was the only component (besides soundblaster live value and cheap nic) that stayed over this time. It was a great buy!
