The X38TurboTwins from ASRock is a great choice for an upgrade board. This LGA775 board supports both DDR2 and DDR3 memory so you can use your DDR2 memory to start and when you need more speed then you can switch the memory out for DDR3. The X38 chipset supports Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Extreme processors as well as Core 2 Duo with 1333/1600 FSB.
The motherboard has everything you would expect. It has 6 SATA ports plus 2 eSATA ports (shared with internal ports) for drives and an ATA133 header for legacy drives. There are 6xUSB ports on the back panel and 2 headers for 4 more ports. There is a 7.1 channel audio system with analog and SPDIF ports.
The motherboard supports overclocking and tuning with Intelligent Overclocking Technologiy and the ASRock OC Tuner. It also has jumper adjustments to ensure stable performance at any speed.
Intel X38 Express ChipsetThe high-end Intel X38 Express chipset features Intel Turbo Memory for improved system responsiveness and supports the latest Intel Extreme Tuning Utility so that over-clockers can exploit every potential of the Intel processors.
ATi CrossFireX Multi-GPU Technology SupportATi CrossFireX is the ultimate multi-GPU performance gaming platform, enabling two or more discrete graphics processors to work together for boosted system performance and a breakthrough gaming experience.
DDR2 and DDR3 Combo DesignThe ASRock X38TurboTwins features two DDR2 and four DDR3 DIMM slots to provide the ultimate flexibility for system memory upgrades.
SATA II with RAID SupportThe second generation SATA interface delivers up to 300MB/sec transfer speed, doubling that of the first generation Serial ATA. The on-board six SATA II ports support RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and Matrix for better performance, enhanced data security, and flexible capacity upgrades.
Gigabit Ethernet ConnectivityThe ASRock X38TurboTwins features a fast Gigabit network interface for high-speed LAN connections at up to 1000Mbps data transfer rates with advanced security features to ward off malicious attacks. Gigabit LAN is ideal for supercharged seamless streaming of Internet audio and video content.
IEEE 1394a SupportIEEE 1394 is a widely used standard of interface between personal computers and digital AV equipment. With IEEE 1394a you can easily connect digital devices such as a digital camcorder to the IEEE 1394a port provided on this motherboard for up to 400Mbps data transfer speeds.

Pros: Relatively inexpensive solution that yields solid performance with room to upgrade. Roomy and stable, with full GPU throughput in Crossfire. Supports DDR2 and DDR3 (though not simultaneously of course).
Cons: PCI-E 16x slots are spaced to just barely accommodate 2 dual slot GPUs. The BIOS in general are amateur hour all the way. No setting to shut off NumLock, no numeric voltage settings for the chipset. At least they didn't cut corners on the hardware's performance...
Overall Review: Overall, this is a really nice MoBo. It does what it should and it runs stably. The BIOS are inadequate for OC'ing, but I really just bought this to run solidly at stock speeds, and it does just that. Be forewarned that you must set the RAM speed with jumpers. Not a deal breaker, but that means that if you install DDR2, you are running at 1066. Period. I dropped in 4GB of 800, and it immediately clocked it up to 1066. It's not a problem since everything is stable and happy, but i was a little surprised, so I thought I would share.
