Is there a minimum number of memory slots that need to be populated?

Mine ran with only 1/8 DIMM slots populated for a while without issues. I would assume 1 is the minimum based off that. The manual doesn't list any minimum though.

Question 2

will this board fit in a standard atx case? the board says ssi atx, can someone clarify this?

I have two of these boards in what I believe are standard atx cases and it fits just fine.  It's worth noting if you plan to put bouble wide pci cards in all slots make sure you get a case with enough room for the final card over hang

Are there specific BIOS settings to get 4x GPU working on this MB?

As long as I have 3 GPU everything works fine, as soon as add 4th GPU the mb does not boot. I have  E5-2699 v3 processor and 64gb RAM. same with and without M2 SSD.

I have 5 GPUs working with KVM/Ubuntu, one in each available slot. I don't remember MoBo itself not booting at all, although I had to tweak a few settings for it to be stable. I think I had to set primary graphics adapter to "OnBoard" for this. I also think with 4 or 5 cards I had to enable Above 4G Decoding.
