Do you need a CPU fan for this motherboard if using it in the Supermicro CSE502L chassis?

No, it should be fine totally fanless. I'm running mine in a very small finless case from minibox. The complete package 1u systems from SuperMicro direct are also fanless as far as the motherboard/cpu are concerned.

I have not tried running Linux on it, but I was able to detect and use all hardware on FreeBSD 9.1. If FreeBSD can do it, chances are good that Linux will work even better, as it gathers much more attention from the community.

How well does this work with UBUNTU 12.0 & 14.0?

I use it with CentOS 6 with zero problems. I'm sure it will work fine for any modern Linux.
