Question 1

Which supermicro 1u chassis works with this I.O layout? All the 1U chassis listed on the supermicro website that are compatible with this MB are the wronge I.O layout. This board has the serial port all the way to the left, which does not work with the 1u supermicro chassis I've been looking at.

Supermicro chassis come with multiple IO shields you can swap. That's not the reason certain supermicro chassis only work with certain boards. If you look up the motherboard on the supermicro website it lists compatible chassis and superservers that contain the board. Google "supermicro X10SLM+LN4F-O".

There are 8 compatible chassis:

I used the CSE-813MTQ-350CB for my build since it came with the rack rails and hotswap HDD bays for reasonable price.

Question 2

Any recommendations on memory?  The Supermicro site list a fairly short list of supported memory.  Looking for 8GB sticks.  Start with 2x8 and add more later if wanted.

I would prefer 1.35v sticks if possible

Kingston KVR16E11/8 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239370 This is what I use because it is the cheapest ecc ram I could find. And plenty of other people have been using it as well. It works great from everything I can tell. It is 1.5v however. ECC RAM is better but tends to have a smaller selection.

Question 3

The Supermicro website has specifications for the X10SLM+-LN4F motherboard, but not a X10SLM+LN4F-O. I read that -O designates standard retail packaging, but what is the significance of the missing minus sign before "LN4F" in the motherboard model offered by Newegg?

I'm fairly certain it's just a typo. SuperMicro has only one model of this particular board. Based on other models in their lineup that have -F and +-F, it would seem that the +- suggests that the LN4F is all of the same i210AT controller. Simply an educated guess.

In addition to that, the board is phenomenal. Running an ESXi 5.5 Server with 8 VM's without a sweat.
