Yes, this will fit. The dell xps 8700 is not a slim profile computer (sff) and does not require low profile cards. Even with the heat pipes sticking up over the card a little you should have no problem installing this card

Is this graphics card compatible with PCI x1 or Legacy PCI?

This depends on what you're asking. This card has the standard x16 connector and would not work on a x1, x4, or x8 sized slot. If you're referring to PCI Express version number, then yes, a version 3 card (such as this one) is typically backward compatible with a version 2 and version 1 PCI Express slot, but not a legacy PCI slot.

This computer works well for my purposes, and even the GTS 250 would be ideal but for the noise under load.

I had chosen Asus Strix 750 TI for a quiet replacement that might even be a modest upgrade, but I managed to ferret out the fact that it's not compatible with my legacy, never-to-be UEFI BIOS.The MSI 750 TI TF has a switch on the board, so would work, but its fan runs all the time, and I'd prefer no fan at all at idle.

My question is:
Will this card work in legacy, non-UEFI systems such as mine?

Yes.
I have had this HD GTX 750 running well at 3860 x 2180 and lower resolution in both an lga775 system like yours and currently in a lga1156 i7 system both of which are not UEFI Bios based.  It has not over heated. I use a Corsair H50 cooler which keeps the cpu well below 50c.  It is recognized fine by both of these legacy Bios driver systems. Motherboards that worked: Gigabyte H61M-D2P-B3, GA-G31M-S2L and GA-G41M-combo

I have an OLD Gateway FX510X, Chipset i975X, CPU Pentium D, 4 GBs of DDR2, with a GeForce 9400 GT, flows easy online for basic browsing, streaming videos, but want more power in graphics. I cannot seem to identify which GPU is compatible with this OLD Desktop which still fires up great in Windows 10 Pro. Is this GPU compatible? I have 350 watt Power supply, PCI Express (probably version 1). Is it worth the upgrade, or something even higher?

I think your PC is a bit old, for practical purposes. It's about a $125 PC at most, as much as this video card. Your GeForce 9400 GT has a Passmark of 196. Unless you are going to use this new card for a future new PC soon, then perhaps an alternative would be something like a EVGA GeForce GT 720 Fanless. About 1/3 the price on newegg vs this card, and has a Passmark of 752, still a big boost and a modern card.

I see that one of the reviewers are saying it can display 4K (4096X2160) at 60Hz over HDMI -- can someone else confirm that?  Does that imply this is HDMI 2.0?

Michael R. You are WRONG buddy.  This is why I asked you if you had this card -- I've purchased this card and can confirm it displays 4k resolution at 60Hz OVER HDMI.

Come on man, i know you had the best intentions -- but please be up front about your experience.  If you don't have this card and are just making some sort of attempt to an educated response, then say so.  Don't pretend you have the card and mislead consumers.

The maximum power draw for the video card is 55 watts, with that being said you need to factor in the wattage of your mother board and all other components. So, honestly the lowest you could viably go is 350 watts.

Hello, I would contact Asus for assistance with troubleshooting to see if the card is defective. Basic troubleshooting would include reseating all connections from the graphics card to the monitor to ensure nothing is loose, and checking your monitor settings to make sure it is on the right feed (set to HDMI if using an HDMI cable, etc.).
