Keep waiting. It's a fantastic card in both performance and looks. You're looking at a 1080 for a reason, settling for a 1070 will just leave you wondering "what if" -- and you'll likely just wind up spending more money down the road. Hold strong. :)

Q: what do we use the small power cable thing that came with it for?

Hey! I think there are 2 components that need power, and in case you don't have enough extensions, you can use the cable to split a single output into the 2 you need (8 and 6 pin). If you do have the output cables, then you don't need it.

Q: So I'm kind of up in the air between the 1080 and 1070. I don't plan on ever playing games in 4k, but I do want to edit 4k videos with it. Would I need the 1080 to actually edit 4k videos or would a 1070 be fine for that??

The memory is faster in the 1080- so in theory it should render things more quickly in something like After Effects. My guess is the 1070 will work just fine. Also keep in mind for After Effects and Premiere they only use 1 GPU when working and previewing, but, will use all available GPU's and video ram/cuda cores when rendering. SO a 1070 now, and adding another later, will speed up rendering more than a single 1080. Personally I went with a double 1080 solution, but I think dual 1070s would offer excellent performance. In the past I've run dual Asus 780 Stix's (so 6gb vram) and had great success. Most of what you do in video editing is more CPU intensive than GPU, although if you do a lot of ray-tracing for lighting/shadows the faster the better for your gpu.

Q: I plan to give away my current card (a EVGA GTX Titan X reference card) to my younger brother and was interested in getting one of these magnificent looking cards. I know I would see considerably more performance in this 1080, but temp wise between the two, is it worth it? I'm trying to gauge the potential lifespan of a beast of this magnitude.

I can tell you after a week of running it in my rig, it has idled in the low 40s and sits in the low 60s when gaming in 4K. Though a more demanding game may raise it a little higher.

Does this gpu have any coil wine at all?

Some people have reported that they have exhibited coil whine, but I haven't had any with mine in OC mode, gaming mode, nor stock configuration.

Question 2

So this is a factory overclocked card, but I still need to use the software to overclock it?  Am I understanding that correctly?

Well it came running roughly around 1800 mHz with out the software, I ended up using msi after burn software and it clocked over 2160 MHz stable. In general this card overclockd very nicely and it runs extremely cool! Super pleased.

The card I received is a 2 slot card.  This card was actually slightly smaller than my EVGA 780, which surprised me (although that card was huge).

The launch of the GTX 1080 overall in all of its SKUs has been an unmitigated disaster in terms of short supply. This is an enthusiast part with arguably limited market, and yet it's so scarce that finding it is like trying to find the Wii around the first Christmas that it came out.

What's the cause? Low yields? Intentional undersupply? Government conspiracy? No one knows, except Nvidia and their AIB Partners, and they're not telling.

Newegg will get 'em when they get 'em.

I have not Experienced any coil whine.  Although, I have not really gone far beyond the out of box OC settings so I don't know if it will happen when pushing it to its limits.  I do have to say this card is pretty quiet and my case fans are louder than the fans on the card.  Not only that, the card fan's have not had to kick into high gear when I have been using it.  I am playing DOOM on max settings 1080p (waiting for new monitor to arrive), and the temperature is < 70 Celsius.

But to answer your question, its a No on the coil whine.
