Does the SLI link come with them? I don't see the one in the photo of the box contents. I have 2 x 670ftw's in SLI so I have a link but I'd like to sell the pair and the link may go with them. Also not even sure the link is the same for these cards as the one for the 670's

No, this card does not supply an SLI bridge.

The SLI bridge is sold with the Motherboard, not the graphics card, as the spacing between the graphics cards that is required to be bridged can vary between motherboards. The purchaser should have their own bridge and selling one with the old card should not be required. If it is, that's on the purchaser.

So I want to go sli but I have the Asus gtx980 not the strix but the one that is no longer for sale on here would this be compatible to do sli?

As I understand, you can mix and match manufacturers and clock speeds and whatnot, they just have to be the same GPU. If you have a 980 you need any other 980, it doesn't matter if it's from a different manufacturer or have overclocking or anything like that. I found this info on the Nvidia SLI FAQ to confirm.

What is the cpu requirement for this card to reach its potential? I have an i7 -3820 3.6ghz?

I'm using an AMD fx8350 4.2ghz and there's no bottlenecking or anything. As for an Intel, I have no idea but if yours is equivalent to the one I have, than you're good. Haha

Why does this one look different? is it overclocked?

It's actually a reference cooler (air-exhaust through the holes in connector plate), rather than a dual-fan ACX cooler. If your question is "Why does this one have a X pattern, instead of the standard reference cooler", because.  It's just a cosmetic change -- EVGA replaced the stock shroud with their own, but the fan assembly is identical.

can i use this card in mac osx 10.10.4?

I would say probably not. You can do a Google search for approved nvidia cards to use with Mac OS but you're still going to need a Mac specific version of the card as they aren't cross platform compatible. For example, the quadro 4000 works with both Mac OS and pc, however there is a Mac specific model and a pc specific model. Hope that helps

I'm really interested in this. It looks to basically be a reference card, with an EVGA styled shell. Does anyone know if the reference backplate works with this card, or if any other EVGA backplate does?

Does anything light up on the side of this particular card?

No, nothing lights up on the side of this GPU. EVGA used different materials to make this card cheaper than a regular GTX 980 and the LED's were a sacrifice. Depending on what you are looking for that could be a pro or a con.

To be clear, ONLY the materials and build used to create the outer cover of the heat spreader are different from the regular 980. the Clocks and internals on the chipset are the same. I have noticed no temperatures that could be considered hot due to that change.

Is this card any better then the superclocked evga card? Or does it just have a different cooler on it?

This IS a Superclocked EVGA card.  The difference is a reference-blower cooler.  Get this if you want SLI, get a ACX2.0 cooler if you want a single card.
