Question 2

does this item use a hardware raid  (chipset to control work) or software(puts a load on the cpu)? How do you know the health status of the raid?

This unit uses built-in firmware to create the array. To your computer, this enclosure just appears as an external USB drive.

Concerning monitoring, I couldn't find a way to monitor the health of it from my old Mac OS X based server. And if I remember correctly (it's been more than a year), the manual gave very vague instructions on fail over and using the front-panel LEDs to determine status of the array. Therefore, I opted to not use the built-in firmware RAID and just set it to JBOD and used Mac OS X to create the mirrored array.

Does anyone know where I can get a manual of this? I dont know how to configure the dip switchs to do what.
