Must these be placed upside right, like in the picture, for proper airlow? Can they be upside down, like in a common bottom mount slot?

They can be placed however as long as there's enough ventilation for it. Upside down will work but I'd be weary of placing it on any sort of rug like that. Your case will have 1/4 an inch or so, plus whatever legs on the case will keep it a good 1/2" off the ground, thats plenty of room. I've used fanless power supplies on HTPCs for years in pretty much any mounting angle/direction imaginable. Go for it, and enjoy. This one is a bit more expensive than others like it, but the quality, reliability, and efficiency is well worth it.

Question 2

It says it only comes with 6 SATA power connectors.  How would I go about increasing that to 10?

You could use molex adapters, I think you would need Y-shaped ones (1 molex -> 2 SATA)

Question 3

I want to use this with a Rosewill W1 Mini Itx case. The Power Supply chamber has very little ventilation with the motherboard plate blocking the top of the PSU. Will this work ok for this PSU or is that too little ventilation?

While I cannot say for sure-and probably wouldn't recommend it-I have run this and a matching power supply on an enclosed small case HTPC and a large case desktop. The power supply does not present as a problem in either of these two installations and when I have touched it after use it was surprisingly cool. I often leave my computer on for days at a time and/or sleep it-have not had issues of my own-but I have not blocked any of the ventilation-even when it was in limited supply such as in the HTPC. My guess is that it would work fine-but there is certainly risk.

Question 4

The 460 Watt version and the 400 Watt version are both the exact same price.  So why would anybody buy the small 400 watt version when they can get the 460 watt version for the exact same price?

And then if they upgrade their computer one day, they have 60 extra watts they can use.

Is there any reason not to get the 460 watt variety?

The 80 Plus ratings are measured at a percentage of full load.  The highest efficiency criteria is at 50% load, where the supply is supposed to be 92% efficient (for 80 Plus Platinum).  In my desktop, I need a maximum of 200W at the heaviest usage, so that's the 50% level of a 400W supply.  And at normal usage, my machine uses only about 100W, or 25% load.  The extra 60W wouldn't help me at all, and would probably be less efficient, because I would be at a still lower percentage of its load.

Question 5

Will this fit in a 2u rackmount chassis?  It says the minimum dimension
is 3.4 in, which is 1.94 * std U height.  so it's going to be close.
I don't want to buy a 2U and then have to ship it back.

This power supply should fit in most 2U chassis that accept ATX power supplies. However, there are some 2U chassis that take 1U or 2U server-type power supplies, and this power supply will not fit in those chassis. So, double-check your chassis, but it should be fine.

Question 6

How does this PSU work in the Fractal Node 304 m-ITX case? Would you recommend it? Does it require any modification of the case or PSU, and does it interfere with any other hardware?

I did not have to modify the case or psu. Psu has been working great thus far. I have six drives in the case. Didn't get in the way of anything.

Is this product compatible with Dell's line of Optiplex PC's?

That depends on what form-factor Optiplex you are trying to use it in. If you are planning on using a full-size PC such as the "Optiplex 980", you should be fine. I cannot say for certain about the mini tower models and I am almost certain it will not fit in the small-form models.

will this power supply trip a gfci?

Not a chance.   This PSU I would not use for a single High end gaming system.   Minimum power requirements for high end GFC is going to be 350 watts.  If you want to run triple GFC I would recommend nothing less than 1200 watts.  Your system will be very unstable with inadequate power being supplied to main board, CPU, memory and hard drive.
