I ordered this product (RX-1200AE), and it is the 80 Plus Gold certified version. As an additional perk, the case/box it comes in is a great for spare parts/tools.

Is this compatible with all ATX/MicroATX motherboards, or just certain ones? I am looking to get the MSI Z87-G55 motherboard.

Yes, this power supply unit (PSU) has a 20+4pin connector for the motherboard. The motherboard you mention (MSI Z87-G55) requires the 24pin, which as mentioned this PSU supports. As a previously poster said, if you decide to go for a smaller case, you may want to look for PSU better suited for smaller cases because this PSU is fairly large. So far though, this PSU has been very good for my system, and I haven't had any issues.

will this power supply handle the r9- 295 x2 in quad fire?

Not likely. You'd probably need at least 1400 watts.
