its an 8 pin for the newer pcie cards...but is also a 6 + 2. If you have the 6 pin card the other 2 pins on the connector will over lap and connect to nothing. I had (2)cards at 6 pins each on it before I took them out and put a 8 pin card and they worked fine....

Would this power supply work with the RAIDMAX Viper GX ATX-512WBG mid size case?

Yes, It will work.   The case takes a standard power supply, which this is.

I am using it in a similar case.  It will suck air from the bottom - outside air and expel it out the back.  This keeps the power supply cooler but requires more fans exhausting air in the case.

It could be turned upside down and suck air from inside the case if the Raidmax Cobra has correct screw holes for this.

Be sure to have enough exhaust fans since the power supply will not be exhausting air from the case

Question 3

I ordered this hoping it wont selfdestruct and ruin my computer. Has anyone had any bad experiences? If it is doa or blows up what do I do?

I purchased this a while back for a new build.  I hadn't tested it until today in response to this question.  I use a power supply tester to check all leads before I connect any equipment to the PSU.  When I tested the Raidmax Cobra, the -12v led didn't light.  Then I tested the HDD power connector no problem.  Disconnected the HDD connector. Then I connected the 6-pin connector and the wires started to smoke and melted the braid around the wires.  PSU failed the pre-install test so I will be returning the one I have.  This is my first Raidmax PSU so I cannot say they will all be defective.  I'm hoping that NEWEGG will make things right.  They have been excellent in the past.  As to your other questions, DOA is found easily with the Power Supply tester.  Blowing up is unlikely if it passes the pre-install test.  This is the first time I have ever had a power supply from any manufacturer fail.

Yes it should, the specs for your case are a bottom mounted psu. This is a very nice psu at a great price but it is not a modular so double check what you need to power to make sure this psu has enough connections to fit your need.

Question 5

Bought on 7/15/2014.
Recently a soft clicking noise, approximately 5Hz or higher, has been emanating from the PSU.  Exhaust fan is still blowing cool air from PSU. No tell-tale smoking PSU smell.  No computer shutdowns.

Is this PSU dying or does anyone else have this issue?

It's most likely a bearing. Nothing serious at the moment I would say but could eventually get worse and freeze up the fan.

The unit I purchased didn't survive 20 seconds.  Unit failed during testing.  Raidmax failed to stand behind their product.  No contact link on their website.  Called phone number provided by Newegg with a full mailbox and no way to leave message.  Submitted a negative review on Newegg which Raidmax responded to.  Raidmax provided an email address to submit a RMA.  Sent the email request for RMA more than a month ago and no response.
  I would recommend choosing another manufacturer for your power supply.

Will it power an R9 290 GPU?

It has the 6 pin connectors, but I don't remember a second set of 8 pin aside from the 2 x 4 for the mobo. Therefore it depends on what model you are using. Might be a cheap adapter for the 8 pin. Power wise,  it depends on the demand from the rest of your build

Yes, it has molex connectors.

I assume by molex you mean the older power connectors for hard drives and CD/DVD drives.  There are 4 of them.

And 6 of the new SATA power connectors for newer SATA drives.

Plus 2 connectors for PCI-E video cards - 6pin+2.  This makes 8 pin each if your video card takes the 8 pin or the 6 pin.

There are also 2 4-pin CPU connectors and a 20+4 connector for the motherboard - which means it will work on the 20-pin or 24 pin mobo.

One last connector - the old 3.5" floppy power supply.  Probably won't be using that, but it is there.

Random shut down could be the result of overheating on the Mother board so get a power supply tester to confirm the failure is in the power supply not the mother board or CPU. 
     PFC is important to protect internal components in the computer especially the higher end motherboards and video cards.  The Raidmax Cobra 700w has over power, under power, and over voltage protection.  That should cover most power condition issues. 
    I use the Raidmax cobra 700w in one of my home computers with good results.  For the price point of the Cobra 700w, it is a good power supply.  This PSU should handle most gaming or small business computing with two GPU's in SLI or Crossfire configuration.
