Question 1

Anyone use this with four r9 290x's? The Enermax 1500 PSU is garbage, couldn't handle two! It started smoking! My buddy who has the same setup as my rig happens to have a different PSU, Rosewill Hercules. I can't find that so I am sticking with this Coolmax. Anyone know if this PSU will crap out with 4 R9's?

Have not specifically tried, but GPUs will pull 75 w from the mobo + 75 w per 6pin pcie power connection plus 150w per 8 pin power connector.  So, if an r9 has 2x8pin pcie connectors - 375 w per card.  4x375=1500w on the 12v rails.

The total power supply rating also includes the 24v and 5v,etc rails - the available 12v power supply is less than the total rated watts (should be listed in the PSU specs or on the actual PSU).

Long story short - if r9s use 2x8pin pcies, you won't find a single power supply good enough for 4 GPUs....and you may even be approaching the 15-20 amp limit on your ac circuit breakers anyway...

(I am currently running this PSU with only 600w of GPUs attached...have not tried to push to limits yet)

Also just to clarify I have three hardrive 5 fans 16 gigs ddr3 bku ray dvd rom and a dvd r. My current PSU is only 1000W and 80amps on rail. Just want to make sure I have enough power. Do I?

WAY more than enough. I have a corsair HX 850 in my X79 rig with 8 fans 2x 7950 gpu's 1 SSD, 2 HDD and overclocked. Under full load I'm only pulling 720 from the wall

I'm running 4x R9 280x and its stable. No issues at all. Each card draw around 350Watt. You will be fine

Ok need to ask need a PSU to work this plus an ivy bridge i7 3.7 quad. Is the 12v going to handle that and how?

Howdy, this PSU is overkill even for quad sli 780s, full atx mobo, 10 HDDs or SSDs, and a full water cooling loop (you would push maybe 1250). As for how it does that? You could want a review of this PSU or a scientific breakdown of how it works- both you can google. Also, to elaborate on the 12 v rail being able to handle that load- that's what it's made for.
