WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

There is no physical difference between a DVD-R/-RW disc and a DVD+R/+RW disc.

There is, however, a series of technical differences between DVD-R/-RW DVD+R/+RW recorder format. The DVD+R/+RW format offers subtle extra functionality for people who record their own movies and audio.

The Standards Differences

1) The DVD-R (pronounced "DVD dash R") and -RW media formats are officially approved by the standards group DVD Forum. The DVD Forum was founded by Mitsubishi, Sony, Hitachi, and Time Warner, so it has tremendous industry support for its technical standards.

2) DVD+R ("DVD plus” R) and +RW formats are not approved by the DVD Forum standards group, but are instead supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.  The DVD+RW Alliance is supported by Sony, Yamaha, Philips, Dell, and JP, so it also has tremendous industry support for its technical standards. Note that Sony supports both organizations.

3) Trivia "DVD Slim" format is not approved by any standards body.

4) Trivia: DVD RAM is a late 1990's format that has lost popularity, and is effectively a non-choice for consumers today, since most movies in 2004 will not play on DVD RAM.

The Functional Differences

The main functional differences between DVD-R and DVD+R are:
 1) the DVD recorder's built-in defects management, 
 2) the way the recorders format and rewrite DVDs,
 3) the price.

I'm in the market for white labled Dvd Rs the ones you can use a marker and label easy is the top surface white or silver ?

I use a permanent marker on them like (Sharpie) works fine don't rub off. It does not have the paper over center.

are these sony disks with the shiny top or are they the white top?

Shiny. So they aren't the good Sony DVDs.

Has anyone had any issues with defects on these?  I've bought spools before where almost every one had a bad spot that made them worthless.

Use them all the time , never heard of it with this brand i could see it with the cheap brand , had the same issue once my dvd burner of 4 years + needed to be replaced . after that back to burning

Are these DVD's printable? I need to use my inkjet printer to make them look nice.

No, I have used printables in the past and they either had no printing on a silver disc or were white.

can music be recorded on disc?

Yes it can, but it would have to be played back on a dvd player that  can play the type of music  you've recorded.  That is you recorded the music as mp3 the dvd player would need to be able to play mp3 etc.

Question 7

What is the media code of these discs? The media code tells you exactly who manufactures the DVD media regardless of brand. Some examples are: RitekF1, MCC004-000, MBIPG101-R05, CMCMAG-AM3, AML003-000, et al. It cannot be found on the disc packaging, it must be scanned from an actual disc using a utility like DVDidentifier, ImgBurn, or Nero DiscSpeed.
