Question 1

The 2.5 spec under "features"  says "up to 9.5 mm?
Does this mean "down to" really?
Specifically. can I fit a 7mm drive in the unit?

You probably can fit that 7mm unit in this. I have never measured the different HDs I have used in here but I used it the other day with a 160GB drive just fine, it was an older 2010 model. I have also used with an old 80GB and a 320GB, as I said, never have measured any. This case is quite slim. Also on my LT comp eSata needs external 5v power to work though. I am not sure if a desktop eSata port would supply power or not, my other external eSata cases are desktop drive sized.

Question 2

I have a SATA hard drive from a notebook which no longer works and want to have access to the hard drive.  Is everything I need to connect it to the USB port in my PC provided with this enclosure?  In essence, once I put the drive into this enclosure, does it become a portable external hard drive?

Yes, everything is in the box that you will need to make it an external drive.  However I'm sure you know if the drive is dead nothing short of sending it in to the manufacturer to remove and read the platters will allow the data to be recovered.

What external power supply should be used with this enclosure?

The USB cable powers the drive.  There are two USB jacks, if one does not supply enough power, you plug them both in.

Question 4

How should the eSata aspect be used? I plugged in the cable and found a power cable from another device. Even tried it with the useb Cable also plugged in. Yet it does not register as an eSata drive ?

Sometimes, I have to make the computer scan for hardware changes, found through an icon in the device manager toolbar. This is kind of a hassle, so I use HotSwap! to connect and disconnect mine. You can find the program online without looking too far. It acts as a tray icon, all you have to do is right click>scan for hardware changes.
