Does it automatically turn on and off when the computer does?

i don't know, i leave it turned on as external storage to my home cloud box. it's really nice, i'll buy more, very slick.

Can you start with one drive and add another later?

i believe so, i have mine set up as raid 1 with two 10tb disks. i plan on another.
