Question 1

it says 2TB; Mariusz G referred to putting a 4TB drive in it - is the 2TB (or 4TB) "per drive" or "total"?

I currently have three SATA drives - 1TB, 2TB and 3TB - that are USB external, and it is a pain in the neck to operate them that way.  I would love to take the drives out of them and put them in a NAS - this looks to be five bays, and if I could put the three drives in here and then add two more at a later date as I need them that would be ideal.  Especially if the other two drives could be 3TB or 4TB.

Or is only 2TB total addressable through the network?  If I can address my existing 6TB AND add another 6-8TB at at later date, this would be idea and I'll order it without delay.

If it doesn't work this way it would be a waste of money to buy it.

Ok I do have 3 of these and I do have 7 x 2TB, 3 x 3TB, 4 x 4TB. All 2TB & 3TB drives are WD Green and 3 x 4TB are HGST and another 4TB is WD Green. I'm not to sure how would 4TB red would be in there since they never sleep as Green drives do. What I would be worry is the heat, that could be why manufacture says it only supports 2TB. I'm not to sure what are you trying to do but you can keep adding drives later. I do have set up where I don't use raid just add drive and share thru the network. With bigger drives you might get higher temp which could make your drives to fail faster.

Question 2

Thank you, but does this item connect directly to my 100 Base-T ethernet, or does it need to be connected to another computer?  If it has to be connected to another computer, how many SATA connections does it need to the host computer?

This is not a full enclosure that will host the drives.  It's a backplane that installed into the 5.25 section of the front of your computer.  It takes up 3 5.25 inch bays to accommodate.  You will need 5 sata ports to connect to on your board or an expansion card to use this.

Question 3

Anybody using 3 or 4 TB drives in this unit? If so, have you had any problems with it? I'm assuming this is a simple pass-thru, and size doesn't matter here, but just want to make sure. The description says 'up to 2TB', but this may just be an old description. Thanks.

Out of 10 hdd (2 x5 cases) I just put in 4TB WD Green it has been only 3 days but no issues so far. Rest of my drives are 2TB, I think this could be issue with the case if you would use Red drives, but I do not own them so I can't comment on it.
