No.  It is a fully enclosed housing for a hard drive.  I use this drive enclosure when I help others who are looking to save their old drives a  external storage space when they trash their old systems for a new one.  It is a really great way to recycle old drives and use them for photo backup and storage.

Does it come with the connecting wire?

Yes, this unit comes with a power adapter and a USB cable to connect to your machine. They even include a small Phillips screw driver to assemble it once you've installed your drive. Also included in the box is a user's manual and a driver and utilities disk.

Question 3

I want to use this with an old smaller 50GB IDE drive to put songs on so I can move them from laptop to laptop to my media server etc.

Does the MASSCOOL UHB-360US Aluminum 3.5" USB 2.0 External Enclosure have an IDE to USB circuit board in it so I just plug in the drive and now its a USB external drive? I assume I have to give it power from an external wall wart or something right?  Please advise.

Yea its that simple, wallwart and USB. I put a 160gb inside but ran into a small hurdle because it didn't see the drive right away.  I had to reformat and repartition using Microsoft's drive utility but I think this was only an issue because the drive was part of a raid configuration prior to being repurposed.  Other than that there're no problems.  The build quality isn't exactly solid but you get what you paid for, its nothing that's going to affect the performance of the product.  Good product, recommended purchase.

Probably,  I am presently using it with a Seagate 3500418AS

If your computer case does not have a hot dock for hard disks than this is as easy to use by just screwing or unscrewing a few screws.

you can change hard drives to clone or back up using WD or Seagate free Acroins Cloning programs from mfg sites.

Have accidentally burned up a motherboard or two so, cloning is definitely necessary.

hope I helped.  by the way,  some enclosures have size restrictions, don't wrk for disks over 1 or 2 terabytes for example

Will this enclosure work with an Ultra ATA Seagate  100 gb drive?

enclosure is fixed box for sata hookup.

you may be able to convert box by hacksawing emclosure to open it up so that you can then use   a eide to sata or ata to sata  adapter.

There is no drivers required for W7 or 8.  They are plug and play unless the HDD you put in it is bad or enclosure is bad.  Usually its the HDD.

I have an IBM 30G ATA/IDE taken out of my Acer laptop.  Compatible for taking old files off for storage elsewhere?

No, it won't. This enclosure only works with SATA drives. Since you're asking about a laptop drive, I'm going to assume it's a 2.5" drive. One ATA/IDE 2.5" enclosure that I've had good luck with in the past is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182145&ignorebbr=1. Good luck!

"Cannot open volume for direct access"
This is the answer I get when connected and trying to format the drive, using win 8 Pro.
the drive does not show up on the Explorer, when I use the command prompt, the CD to E: the E: passes by but goes back to C: and get the above error.  while checking the drive on Linux box
I retrieved information and formatted the drive with NTSF ..
connecting to a Win 8 Pro OS, I get the above error.
Is the UHB 360US defective or am I.
After formating I connected to Win 8 with my SATA USB Adapter,
and re-formatted with Win 8, now connecting the Misscool I get this error. The driver disk does not help.??

Check Drive management.  (Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Disk Management)  Make sure the drive is shown there and has a usable drive letter.

Windows will sometimes not give out a drive letter or assign a drive letter that is duplicated some else on your system.
