Does this work by simply plugging in the USB port to the laptop? Will everything download or is there more to be done?

Yes, you plug it into the USB jack, hopefully a USB 3.0 jack, but after that you drag and drop files into the drive's window. Transfer is not automatic, unless you have a backup program that you have configured to save onto the new drive. Occasionally, the drive will not be seen by the computer when you plug it in. In that case, leave it connected to the computer and do a RESTART, or turn the computer off and back on again.

The case appears to have a 5v power input port! Does this device require an external 5v power supply or will it work w/just the 3.0 cable?

I suppose that would depend on whether your USB port includes power... And weather the hard drive that you put inside requires more current than the USB spec provides for.

WILL A 2.0 SSD DRIVE WORK IN THIS UNIT? Will the unit work like any usb device no matter what is on the drive now?

Yes, this unit will support any HD SSD or standard HD 2.0-3.0 USB it also supports Apple and PC .

Does this drive enclosure model have a tray to which the hard drive is attached with screws, as my NexStar CX Model #NST-200S2 older enclosure does?

Yes it does have a tray with 4 mounting screws for 2.5" drives
