Question 1

Should I buy the MSI MPG A850GS PCIE5 or the older MPG A850G PCIE5?

Accepted Answer

Choose the MPG A850GS PCIE5 for a new build using current PCIe 5.1 graphics cards or if you want dual native 12V-2x6 sockets. Both models provide 850W output, full modular cabling, 80 PLUS Gold efficiency, and a 150 mm chassis, but the older MPG A850G PCIE5 uses PCIe 5.0 and has one 16-pin connector. The MPG A850G remains a practical choice when it is substantially cheaper and your graphics card does not require the newer connector standard.

Question 2

Is the MSI MPG A850GS PCIE5 worth choosing over the MAG A850GLS PCIE5?

Accepted Answer

Choose the MPG A850GS PCIE5 when you value the longer 10-year warranty, server-grade 105°C capacitors, and dual native 12V-2x6 sockets. Choose the MAG A850GLS PCIE5 when its lower-tier pricing is more important and one native 12V-2x6 connector is sufficient. Both models provide 850W capacity, ATX 3.1 support, 80 PLUS Gold efficiency, a 150 mm chassis, and native 600W-class 12V-2x6 connectivity.

Question 3

Should I get the MSI MPG A850GS PCIE5 or step up to a 1000W or 1250W power supply?

Accepted Answer

The MPG A850GS PCIE5 is the better fit for most single-GPU gaming PCs whose estimated peak demand remains comfortably below 850W. Move to a 1000W or 1250W model when the system combines a higher-power graphics card, a high-power CPU, extensive overclocking, or a planned future upgrade. MSI’s higher-capacity MPG models retain the same 150 mm chassis size while increasing available output and, on the 1250W model, providing two native 12V-2x6 connectors.

Question 4

Is the MSI MPG A850GS PCIE5 a good choice for a compact gaming PC?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if the case accepts a standard ATX power supply and the system needs up to 850W. Its 150 mm length is compact for a fully modular ATX PSU, leaving more room for cable routing than longer units. It is suited to performance-focused compact builds, but it is not a substitute for an SFX or SFX-L power supply in cases designed specifically for those smaller form factors.

Question 5

Is 850W enough for a high-performance gaming PC?

Accepted Answer

The MSI MPG A850GS PCIE5 is suitable for many single-GPU gaming systems, including builds using modern high-performance graphics cards that recommend an 850W supply. Confirm the graphics card and CPU power requirements before purchase, especially for heavily overclocked, multi-GPU, or unusually power-hungry systems.

Question 6

Does this PSU connect directly to modern graphics cards?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It includes two native 12V-2x6 connectors and supports PCIe 5.1, with up to 600W available per connector according to the product specifications. This can reduce reliance on separate GPU power adapters, but the graphics card's connector requirements and recommended wattage should still be checked.

Question 7

Will this power supply fit in my PC case?

Accepted Answer

It uses a standard ATX form factor and measures 150 mm long by 150 mm wide. It should fit cases that support standard ATX power supplies, but verify the case's maximum PSU length and leave additional room for modular cable connectors and cable bends.

Question 8

Is this PSU a good choice for a quiet gaming PC?

Accepted Answer

It is designed for low-noise operation with a 135 mm fluid-dynamic-bearing fan and Zero Fan Mode. That makes it a reasonable choice for quieter builds, although actual noise depends on system load, room temperature, case airflow, and fan settings.

Question 9

Does this PSU include the cables needed for a new PC build?

Accepted Answer

As a fully modular PSU, it is designed so you connect only the cables required by your system. The product specifically includes native 12V-2x6 GPU connections, but you should confirm the included cable count for your motherboard, graphics card, SATA drives, and accessories before installation. Do not reuse modular cables from another power supply.
