Is the heatsink included in the box?

Yes, a basic heatsink is included, with a pre-applied thermal grease. I personally use Arctic Silver grease and the included heatsink and it works fine.

Thanks for your replies about the size of the fan.  I want to put this in a 1U chassis.  Do I need a different cooling package?

Yes.  When installed, the combined height of the cooling package and the CPU is 1.875" (measured from the motherboard to the top of the cooling package), and the height of 1U is 1.75"

Is this a low profile fan?

Its a normal Intel fan that comes with all intel chips.  About 2-3 inches high from the motherboard.  I never use them.  I usually get the Coolermaster water cooling.  It works better.

Question 4

Everywhere else I look but here says this cpu has 8 threads  Userbenchmarks "Xeon E3-1230 v3, SOCKET 1150, 1 CPU, 4 cores, 8 threads" even the intel web site says is has 8 threads.Yet here they list it as having only 4 threads. am I missing something?

I see 4 CPU/cores in performance monitor. However, I'm not sure if hyper threading feature is supported by this processor or not and what are my settings for that in BIOS.

Will this processor be good for a storage server running FreeNAS with 20-30 concurrent connections? I plan on running 32GB of ECC memory with 4GbE ports.

I think it'll be more than enough.

This is the core of my home FreeNAS box.  While it's really just me as a user, FreeNAS reports I haven't hit more than 20% CPU usage in the last 6 months.  It's able to handle drive encryption, Plex video transcoding, and fully saturate a single 1G link w/out breaking a sweat.

Probably not the best question since this processor is meant for servers and work, But how does this processor do Gaming-wise?

It's a Haswell- thus IPC is awesome and that makes it great for gaming. Expect it to run games like an i5-4440 or 4460 would. No integrated graphics, but you don't want to rely on an IGP anyway if you are gaming.

Lookup LGA 1150 motherboards on here to see your options.  Depending on whether you are using this for a server or a workstation will further refine your options.  The compatible memory will depend on your motherboard selection, which should be provided in the description.  If you are using this for a server, you will want to consider ECC and registered memory.  Really, you may want to consider that for a workstation as well, but that would mostly likely require you to use a server motherboard for a workstation.
