Is this the older / just plain DDR? Is this for a laptop? Thanks.

Yes, this is small form factor laptop memory. DDR, not DDR2 or 3 or 4- each different DDR version has different pins. 
What you can do is go to crucial dot com and enter the make/model of your laptop and they will recommend a speed and tell you the maximum supported memory.

will this ram memory upgrade, be compatible, on my Dell Inspiron 9100? I'm upgrading OS system from XP to Windows 7, and have to upgrade ram memory from 512 to at least 1GB. 32 bit OS system on upgrade. thanks

Should be no problem. The specs I found below show 2 slots for that RAM with no open slots. 1 Gig, however, is a minimum for Windows 7, so you should be purchasing 2 sticks and replacing any old RAM in the laptop.
