I have mine running with 2 x 4 Gb memory and it is running fine. Try to make sure to buy a renown brand. Corsair, Kingston, etc. and have the correct memory spec. DDR3 1066/800 204 pin SO-DIMM.

I'm not sure what 'pc3 8500' means. I would like to know that this is compatible with an Acer 5749 laptop before I purchase it. Does anyone know if this will work?

Yes this memory should work with your laptop, if you don't know what the 8500 means, just make sure it is DDR3 1066 Memory and you will be fine.

Yes, however there are only two slots on that laptop.  You would need to remove one or both sticks of factory memory depending on how much RAM you wanted to add.

Need memory for my dell inspiron 1764 laptop.  Is this memory module compatible?

Wow, that would take a little research.  You have to remove the RAM and find out if it's DDR2 or DDR3 (where the notch is on the connector is the clue) Dell's website might tell you what the 1764 uses, it would help to know what year you bought the laptop.  DDR3 is 3rd gen, it is currently the most popular with DDR4 entering the marketplace late last year.  Unfortunately if you've never removed ram from a laptop it can be easy or difficult depending on the model.  Some Dell laptops you simply remove 2 screws and pop it out.  On others like my former inspiron you have to remove all the bottom screws, disassemble the bottom and keyboard and find the ram.  There are youtube videos that may show you how to do that for your 1764.  This can be a pain, only techs that specialize in laptops do this.  I myself have guessed which ram to purchase in the past and had it bite me in the rear when I get it home and it's the wrong ram.  Also ram speed: 1066, your ram may be 1600 or you may want to bounce up to 1600 for more speed.   I hope this helps.

Buying this to improve performance on my mom's 2GB 4-yr-old Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5135. Will there be an issue w/having a 2GB and 4GB Memory stick in the laptop together? Or should I remove the OEM 2GB and just increase to 4GB vs 6GB? Thanks much!

I've done this upgrade on a similar satellite. There should be no issue with putting a 4 in one slot and a 2 in the other. Make sure the frequencies match. You can use newegg's ram finder to make sure you get the right modules if you're concerned. Summary, BEST to put two matching RAM chips in, but you shouldn't have a problem. I have several laptops and desktops which came with 4 GB, and I added 8, making the odd 12 amount. No issues.
