Does this come with 2 sticks of ram or do I have to buy 2 sticks of ram, and do I even need 2 sticks of ram for it to function?

This is a single stick 4GB memory. The determining factor about whether or not you need one or two sticks has nothing to do with the memory itself, that is determined by the system/OS you are buying it for. In my case I have a system that operates in pairs, so I bought two sticks (2 x 4GB) for my 64-bit system/OS. If you have a 32-bit OS and your system only requires a single stick to be used then you can just get one stick. However if your system requires you to use two slots then you should probably get 2 x 2GB chips for your 32-bit OS. There are websites you can go to that will let you know what your system/OS will allow.

Question 2

My wife just bought an HP Pavilion 500-590 Desktop PC.  The RAM spec is PC3 12800 (DDR3-1600) 240-pin.  I want to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB by adding 4GB.

I cant find any specific info on the memory for this computer.  Is the Kingston Model KVR16N11S8/4 the correct DIMM?

check first to see if it is ddr3. if it is it might work. find out the mother board manufacture and check the website to see if the memory is compatible.

I have a Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 72 type 3484 desktop running Win 7 Pro, 64-bit. It has 2 memory slots for PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 RAM. It currently has 2 sticks of 2 GB each for a total of 4 GB RAM.
Can I replace one of the sticks with 4 GB, leave the other 2 GB stick, and will the system access 6 GB of RAM?

Hmm, well on the one hand it would PROBABLY work, but typically speaking you don't want to mix and match ram sticks. So your computer has two separate slots or channels for RAM, but because they're the same type of RAM from the same manufacturer any task can be split across both sticks. If you mix different types of RAM they can't work together and you have two separate channels, one of 2 GB and one of 4. It would probably be an improvement, but it wouldn't be as good as getting two 3 GB sticks

I have 3 x 2GB Sticks of OCZ memory for a total of 6GB RAM.  Can I just add 3 more sticks of this 4GB to make it a total of 18GB.  Or do I have to add only the same type of RAM?

First and foremost, you need to look at the compatibility with your motherboard.  The manual that came with your motherboard will tell you if you can mix and match various sized sticks and how they should be plugged into the board.  Next, the best practice is to always match and run the same brand /size sticks.

I received this RAM stick.  It's a low profile(very small) RAM stick.  Is this RAM stick a low profile RAM stick???

I purchased two of those sticks for a mini tower and they fit and work very well. I have had no problems with them. As to whether or not they are low profile or not, I would say yes. But they still work very well in tight spaces.

If it is a DDR2 motherboard, then no it will not fit or work. Only a DDR3 motherboard will accept this and a quick google search will tell you. If it is a DDR3 mobo then this will run at whatever speed the motherboard is rated to.

THE MEMORY. WHAT IS BUFFER AND UNBUFFERED MEMORY?

Buffered (also called Registered) RAM has additional hardware (a register) that sits between the memory and CPU, and will store data (buffering the data) before it's sent to the CPU. This is meant for reliability in systems that have lots of memory and lots of memory modules (think large servers), because in those systems more memory modules means more electrical demands, so buffering/registering the data reduces electrical load.

You don't really have to concern yourself with it if it's just some home machine, as it does tend to be more expensive (because it's more complex and intended for servers and machines of that class) and slightly slower (because of the memory buffering).

Also, some memory also is classified as ECC RAM, which has additional circuitry to determine if data has errors and correct them if so. It's also more expensive, and intended for reliability, and it's usually a paired feature with buffered/registered memory.

Is this ram compatible (the same as) the Kingston model KVR16N11/4?

Im not shure. but i had problams with this ram in a DELL computer. and ASUS board.  i ended up giving it away. i would not recomend it.
