I myself have been running m.2 nvme drives now for 5 years and have installed a couple hundred for customers and friends. They do run HOT!! when doing a lot of sustained writes , and I mean very hot! I edit and move multitrack audio and video wav and raw files constantly. We are talking very very large files and so do a few friends of mine. The golden rule, any time a device runs excessively hot you risk shortening its lifespan not to mention reduced performance. I would not run any nvme without some kind of heatsink device no matter how hard you use your machine and also make sure you use a premium heat tape or compound with it for even better performance. So far the only failures or poor performing drives I have seen were in laptops that had no room for any kind of extra device. I have 5 year old nvme drives still performing like new that run 24-7 and have had multiple OS reloads and sustained 30-40gb files run thru them constantly daily as I am a beta tester for MS and a few other software companies as well as owning a recording studio and computer shop, so for me no matter what a manufacturer may claim about "requiring" one, the proof is in the use. I run heat spreaders and sinks like people wear clothing, nearly constantly and would advise anyone to do the same.

Yes! However, You will NOT achieve the speeds of PCIe 4.0 due to PCIe 3.0.

Does the 2 TB version support read speeds of 7,000?

The spec and datasheet seem to indicate that as long as you are running a CPU and chipset capable of PCIe 4.0, and use an M.2 socket capable of PCIe 4.0, you should be able to reach these speeds on any of the 500, 1000, and 2000GB devices; this also assumes there are not any software bottlenecks with specific applications. Test will certainly be done once this is released so we shall see.
