Is the palm/wrist rest removable?

It isn't removable. It's made of plastic, but has a nice feel to it and doesn't feel like it's in the way.

Is this keyboard compatible with windows 8?

Yes its compatible, I used Windows 8 and now I'm using 8.1. Its a good keyboard, big fast keys and back lite also.

Can you change the color of the backlight?

Unfortunately no, you can't. It only has a red backlight. You can change the brightness and turn it off, though, if you'd like. I find the the red light is not overwhelming at, even with my sleek, black, build. Plus, it's a fantastic keyboard. The keys have a very satisfying click to them that I haven't experienced with other keyboards. It's not ideal for gaming, but it does EVERYTHING at least fairly well.

I'd highly recommend it.

No it is not. It is still an excellent keyboard. I have not used a mechanical keyboard for gaming, but I do not imagine it would be worth the extra money

I'm running windows 8, and all the media keys work. The only problem I've had is with the software that Microsoft uses to recognize it freezing up, which isn't very often at all, and even when it does it doesn't affect the keyboard. All the media buttons can have their function changed through the software Microsoft wants you to download, and even without it the media keys will work just fine. So yes, it should work with windows 8.1.

Is this a Mechanical keyboard?

The Microsoft Sidewinder X4 is NOT a mechanical keyboard. I specifically chose this keyboard because I prefer the quieter keys of a non-mechanical keyboard, in addition to the excellent "anti-ghosting" this keyboard supports.

Under system requirement its states that you have to have windows 7/vista/xp, but i'm planning on building my own pc and directly installing windows 8 and skipping all of the older models. Will this keyboard be compatible with my new windows 8 desktop?

I have not personally messed with windows 8 as it doesn't catch my eye, but i would assume that the keyboard itself would function just fine. The macros, on the other hand, i think depend on the program that comes with the keyboard. Im not exactly sure when this keyboard was released, but there might be an updated version of the program. you can always check on Microsoft's website.

Can this be used on a Toshiba laptop wit Windows 7?

Yes, it is a windows compatible keyboard. If you have a USB port you are good to go.  Only thing I have to say is, it is a bit different  of a layout, meaning it will take some time to get use to, because everything is a bit shifted to the right. Great keyboard though :)

I'm using Windows 7 and the keyboard has worked great! I went to Google and wrote "Sidewinder X4 compatibility with Win 8" and found a ton of info on the subject. After reading some of the posts it does look like there may be some issues. I suggest you contact Microsoft directly.
