Question 1

Reviews say that the LED backlight doesn't come on automatically.  Does that mean you have to switch it on every time you need it?  And how do you do that?  An easy button push?

My reason for wanting the keyboard is to be able to go to my computer in the dark and work on it without having to turn lights on in order to log on to the computer with a password.  Having to turn lights on in order to log on so I can light the LEDs sort of defeats the purpose.

Yes, you need to switch it on manually every time you boot up. It's the scroll-lock key which is the second to last key on the top row.
The keyboard, as far as I remember, does stay on as long as you don't actually shut down your computer, but I'm not positive if it stays on in hibernate mode. You don't need to "log-in" to a user account to turn the keyboard on, however. I usually turn my keyboard on when it's in POST.
I've never had an issue with it; finding the key by feel is not too difficult and you'll hit it eventually anyways.

Are the keys on the kayboard mechanical or standard?

The keys are not mechanical but they are not standard either...kinda in between.  Pretty "clicky" and have a higher button push then membrane

Question why does this says OEM at the top at the end of the name of the project????

OEM typically means it comes without the marketing materials or other goodies typically associated with a retail product. For example, it may come in a plain brown box (or no box) as opposed to the pretty full color packaging you would in the store, it may not come with a manual or software cd (probably not needed on a keyboard and if it is it would be on the website,) and in extreme cases you get less or no warranty.

How many USB ports does this need?

The keyboard needs 1 usb port and the mouse needs 1 usb port of its own. You don't need to use both devices at the same time if you don't want to, I suppose.

Mac compatibility???

It has an annoying bug when trying to use it with a Mac. It uses the scroll lock to toggle the back light on and off. Macs don’t have scroll lock, so you can’t toggle the backlighting if you use this with a Mac. I ended up giving it away to a friend who was building a new PC because I had too many problems keeping the back light on when using it with my Mac mini.
