Does this keyboard use mechanical switches?

no, it uses regular switchs, but its awesome for gaming, I have bought 5 of these so far, 4 for each comp. and 1 for a back up, once you get used too the gaming part, you will never use another keyboard , and the first one I bought I am still using, over 5 years old.

I use a KVM switch from IOgear and was wondering if this kb will work also on a mac mini running osx mavericks? I currently have a cyborg kb that does work for both my win7 pro and osx mavericks through my IOgear GCS634U, 4-Port USB KVM Switch. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Well, I'm sorry I don't know about how it will work with Mac OSX.  What I can tell you is that it is USB connected to my PC (W8) and it also has Speaker/headphone and Mic connector so that you can connect those from the kb.  For the money I paid for this I couldn't have gotten a better kb.  It is rock solid, heavy duty and has the keys placed just the way I like them.  I haven't even tried the programmable keys because I like the set-up the way it is so no need.  I actually do very little gaming and love this for both a solid typing keyboard and gaming board when I need it.  Sorry I can't be of much help re. Mac OSX.

Yes I used it with windows 8, and basically every product you buy with a windows logo will be supported by win8.

what are the dimensions of the keyboard?

It's a lot wider than a standard keyboard. Which really isn't a problem but is only kind of annoying when you set a plate of food next to your keyboard while gaming and realize it's now teetering over the edge of your desk.

I have Windows 8.1 and do not know Mac, I have had windows 
from the begin with a 8088 comp.
