Is the hand rest detachable?

Yes it is detachable.  It pivots a little too to allow for keyboard back leg height adjustment.

Is this board waterproof?

No it's not. If you're thinking of replacing a Saitek Eclipse II keyboard with this one, you'll be very disappointed. The back lit only comes in one color, red and a toggle button that is sorta bright to not bright at all. In my opinion, Mad Catz ruined the best keyboard ever made.

Question 3

Im assuming that because they call this keyboard a "gaming keyboard" it is mechanical? if so what key type is used : cherry red, cherry blue?

I am not sure if this is a "mechanical" keyboard or not since it isn't as crisp and doesn't make that key-stroke sound. The buttons are similar to those of your regular keyboard. In other words, this keyboard is like a regular keyboard + backlighting and anti-ghosting. I really like this keyboard for the price. I think actual mechanical keyboards are way too overpriced.

Question 4

Why are two different versions of this product presented?  The MadCatz version shows all keys except for the Windows and Menu keys illuminated.  The "Cyborg" version seems not to show this, and just has generally red backlighting...  If I ordered this, I would want to be sure to get the MadCatz version, so I would want to know how to differentiate between them in ordering.

Good stuff, Tony.  Thanks.  Yeah, as soon as I can scrape the bucks together, I'll probably get one of these.  I've been really pleased with my Saitek Eclipse Red, but the silver keycaps are starting to wear off in spots.  I've done touch-up with some Duplicolor, but it's still kinda gnarly lookin'.  I'll retire the Saitek to my test bench, as it's still a great keyboard typing-wise.

Does this keyboard work with windows 8?

I wouldn't see why is wouldn't, the keyboards these days are compatible with most operating systems.
