Question 1

Are the special characters illuminated or just painted on the key caps? I want to use this for programming in a dim room and I need (at a minimum) the following to be illuminated: @ # $ % ( ) [ ]

It's super bright when I have the lights off. The keys make a lot of noise. I'm also a fellow programmer. And I suggest getting something less expensive or just one that doesn't have the loud mechanical sound. I use mine for gaming. But yes it illuminates

How long is the cable on this keyboard? I need to run it about 6 ft. or more, and would like to know if I need an extension to get it to my computer.

Mine measured out to about 5.5 ft, would probably recommend an extension just to be safe.

How do you turn on the backlights for this keyboard?

There is an fn key at the bottom of the keyboard you hold that down and press f10. F11 and f12 control the brightness and f9 controls the light mode.

How long does it take for the paint to rub off of the keys? I have a 1 year old Rosewell and the paint came of the keys long ago. It's starting to become annoying now. Any suggestions on a good quality keyboard that have molded in letters?

The keys are backlit rather than painted, so there's a translucent plastic embedded in the keys.  I don't think there should be any worry about the paint rubbing off.  A more likely issue is that the backlights themselves dim or break such as due to a spilled drink or excessive amounts of dirt.

Is this compatible with 2013-and-after Apple computers?

Absolutely, no specific drivers needed just plug and Go. Just remember that it has two usb plugs, onefor data and the usb hub, the other to power the leds. If you find yourself with only one port available, the board will still work, just No backlight feature. Great board, you should have no problems with Apple products.
