how do you activate the colors?

If you bought it new it should have a manual. If not do a search for "rosewill neon k52 rgb software" go to the Rosewill site and look under downloads. Setting up the colors and style uses the FN key with other keys, like numbers and directional keys to give different colors and effects. The FN key is the 2nd key to the right of the space bar. I know it's not exact instructions but there are way more instructions then just do this or press that. Read the manual; it's not hard once you have the key combinations in front of you.
