Is the palm rest made out of rubber or it's plastic?

It's plastic under but but has a rubber texture on the top, I find it very comfortable, but I is removable, also if your wondering about durability, I bought it in December 2013 and had no problems with it at all.

Yes Kevin, that is what I meant. Thank you! I know the letters on the KB506 are probably quite visible but that keyboard is much larger. I just wanted to make sure the blue colored and size of the lettering on this keyboard is also easily visible before purchasing?

This keyboards keys are lit in blue and are easily visible in the dark or low light conditions. There is a key to turn the backlights on and off. The keys letters and numbers, etc. are larger than other keyboards I have owned. I am very satisfied with this board.

I have looked at this keyboard for its smaller size as well as the Azio KB506 for the visual help. How does the print size & visibility compare? Thank you!

The KB506 has much larger characters on each key and the backlight's 5 colors are adjustable for intensity.  The KB501 has standard sized key characters and only has on level of blue back-lighting.  Not everyone will see enough contrast with the blue color so for sheer visibility, the KB506 makes more sense since the colors and intensity are adjustable.  The KB501, however, is very comfortable with a wide palmrest.  If the keyboard was for someone who has impaired vision, I would go with the KB506.  For everyone else I think the KB501 has "just right" back-lighting and a more comfortable typing position.

Can't say how it would do under a high speed typist. I only use it for web browsing, for which the backlight is quite handy.

The picture shows the keys as purple, yet the description says they are blue.  I need to know which color I would get if I ordered this.  Please help me?

I was a little concerned as well when I ordered. But when I plugged it up, it glowed a very vivid blue. Hope that helps

manipulates the volume through the windows sound control slider that usually sits in the tray by the clock.

is this keyboard compatible with mac ?

Not completely, the shift keys are not seen by maverick, the left ctrl is found as the shift key, the shift keys do not register as anything so no remapping can fix it. other than that, works fine, even the volume knob.
