Yes, there is a setting in the menu that allows for both table and ceiling use. You can also use the projector either in front of or behind a screen. The setting can be accessed via, Menu --> Setting --> Projection --> Front-Table, Front-Ceiling, Rear-Table, Front-Table.

wight the 4000:1 what is the greatest distance the projector can be from the screen?

In response to Edward M's answer. One laptop that was hooked up to this (AMD video card) was giving the darkness you describe through HDMI. The solution was to change the aspect ratio setting to 16:9 instead of auto. It only happened with a single laptop that was using an AMD discrete graphics card. 4 other laptops, a desktop, and a PS3 all worked perfectly through HDMI. I have a feeling it has something to do with the AMD sending an odd resolution or refresh rate. Note all other PC devices used NVIDIA or intel graphics solutions.
