whats the length of the cable?

like 7 feet ( it is a very generous legth you should have no problems at all)

will it work under win 8?

I use it on vista. Mine has been a good mouse.

The Gigabyte site lists an M6880X. The picture of the package on this site, and its description do NOT list the X. What's the difference, Is the X version available?

I do not know for sure. I would bet its the same model. The one I recieved from NewEgg reads M6880. Not knowing for sure, its possible the "X" was put on the product before its release to the public. Some manufacturers use "X" in the developing of products, meaning "Experimental". I've had mine about a year and have been really happy with it.
