Is the item as pictured (i.e., ports are on the back of the unit) or are the ports on the front of the unit? There are two versions of this switch - one has the ports on the back (as pictured) and one has the ports on the front.

I would say they are competitive with each other.  I typically find the Netgear GS108 on sale cheaper and they frequently have rebates so,  I generally go with them.

The Linksys has an appearance and cable clutter advantage if you are putting them on a desktop since the ethernet ports are on the back and the activity lights are on the front.

The Ubiquiti "Edgerouter X" is what I would buy today in the $50~60 price range if you can live with the smaller port count.  I'm personally hoping they come out with an 8-port version at a similar pricepoint to compete with Netgear and Linksys.  My friend was having issues with video streaming at his house and swapped his router/switch for the Ubiquiti Edgerouter and saw dramatic performance improvements in his application which didn't require 8 ports for ~$50 which was less than the price of a service call.

In general, most people won't notice the performance differences between these choices but, video gamers and streaming movie viewers may see tangible improvements with the newer high performance routers like the Ubiquity Edgerouter X.

Question 3

How to really set up Qos to prioritize video and audio applications for better streaming (IEEE 802.1p), and how to adjust the Auto-Sensing ports to prioritize to maximize data flow rates of 10/100/1000 Mbps?

I have an Apple TV that I will use with NetFlix and a Vonage unit that I will connect to two of the ports and I would like to prioritize those two ports above the other six ports, if if is really possible in an unmanaged switch to do such a thing.

I don't believe it is possible being a switch (vs. a router w software interface), however there will be no need for such a set up.  Unless you have a few other lines streaming HD video, this will handle the traffic.  I use one with two Roku Ultras, and have two young people who live attached to their Macbook airs.  The Apple TV seems to use a lot of bandwidth vs. a Roku / Netflix feed, but I have never had a problem with two or more simultaneous.  My input is cable is at best in the 100/110mps range.  Your isp download speed will probably be your weakest (slowest) link.  These will be splitting that up at amazing speed vs. say a wireless router.

How did you guys/ladies access and setup the QoS on the SE3008 switch?

Connect the router to your network using an ethernet cable. Open your browser and go to the default IP address is 192.168.1.1.  The instruction book tells you he default user name and password.
