can you plug a ethernet rj45 cable into this box?

Yes you can (and that is what the specifications say for Ports: "5 x RJ45"). It does have 5 ethernet rj45 ports. I use it for extending the network, just connect a CAT5 or CAT6 ethernet cable from a router or another switch similar to this one into one of the ports and now be able to connect 4 additional computers or other devices to the network.

Does this switch plug directly into an internet router port thereby supplying 5 additional ports with internet access?

My modem/Router connects to the switch via an ethernet cable. That takes up one of the five ports on the switch, leaving only four ports for devices to access the internet. I have my computer and VOIP phone adapter cabled into the switch. Things are working well. You would have to get a switch with more then five ports if you need to support five or more devices from the switch.
