Question 1

I am VERY new at this.. my son did this stuff for  me and he passed away.  OK.....
I need a wired router to accomodate Netflix... Ethernet and all that.. Does this qualify?

Not by itself. It may be impossible to find just a wired router. Installation is simple. First, unplug the cable or DSL modem. Using the Ethernet cable included with your router, connect your cable or DSL modem to the router using the port (looks like a large phone jack) marked WAN. Now connect your TV or video device to any of the other remaining LAN ports on the back of the router. Power up the modem and router and you should be good to go. Unless you are connecting more than 4 wired devices you will not need this switch. Hope this helps.

I recently moved into a house with RJ45 jacks thruout. i have Verizon fios Verizon MI424WR Router located in the living room near a house rj45 jcack and i want to extend my wired network to the office using the house rj45 jack located there. will this device enable me to extend my current fios wired network to my office Macbook via the existing rj45 jack?

Darci, If the wall jack is live, you should be able to connect this device and be able to connect upto 4 more devices through it. But make sure the jack is live. If you plug ur router to the jack on the living room, it does not mean your whole house will be live. for every wall jack in the house to be live, there should be cable coming out of your router going to that wall jack through the walls. At my house, I have 4 rooms that have wall jacks and one room with 4 jacks each of which connect to those 4 jacks. From my router I have 4 cables coming out that go to each of those 4 jacks in main room and hence the 4 room that they are internally connected to, gets live.

Question 4

I simply want to use this as an "on/off" switch for my wife's computer.  How do I switch from a connected port to an empty one?  Pulling the power is not n option.

There are only 2 options, 1: Pull the power out(and you said that's not an option) or 2 take the Cat5 cable out for that PC, unplugging it to stop the connection for that certain PC. unfortunately unless you want to spend a large amount of money on a switch that has a port shut off, it's still going to be operated by software, not like an on/off switch (like a light switch).
