Question 1

Does this switch have an LED for each port, or only one? The images seem to conflict. Also, how bright are the LEDs?

I am the original poster of this question. I just received my unit. I wanted to clarify for anyone reading this in the future. There is only one light on the front. The activity lights are on the back, next to each port. (One green activity light per port, no link speed light). The switch looks like the one next to the title, not the one in the overview. It seems they changed the layout since 2017, and haven't changed the overview page yet.

Is this switch wall mountable?

Yes, it is wall mountable.  The User Guide has a diagram of the bottom slots on page 6.  The User Guide can be downloaded from the TP-Link website, as listed on the newegg Specifications tab.

Question 3

I have one 100ft Ethernet cable running down into my basement, and have several devices that need a cable. Will this increase the speed I would get, similar to a repeater? And would it slow down running multiple high usage devices through it?

This  Model  works well under normal usage it can however lock up if its overwhelmed i have one of these and 3 other models of TP LINk switches I use them because they seem more stable then other brands which would lock up more frequently under less load for the buck this is probably the best choice for LAN only i have a TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND V1 Wireless N300 Gigabit Router at the end of a 100 foot line to the other end of the house that used as a switch / WIFI hotspot and works flawlessly has never locked and also adds the WIFI benefit to that area you might want to consider this choice as an alternative

Question 4

I am adding this to my network, don't know much about switches, but this will be connected after my router, so with the DHCP for each connected does the Router itself provide the IP addresses?
I am using my router to assign static addresses to all my equipment, so if I assign the address to a certain device, will it still be given to the device after the switch?

This is an unmanaged switch, which basically means it is nothing more than a pass-through; it allows you to take one ethernet cable and extend it to 7 others. You will plug one line from your router, which assigns IP addresses, into this device and then you have the ability to extend your network 7+ more times. There is nothing to configure with this device (hence unmanaged), simply plug in the power, plug in a cable from the router, and then plug in any devices you want on the network - all devices will then communicate with each other. This devices will not have anything to do with the IP addresses; that is between the end-user/machine and the actual router. If you Google unmanaged routers and basic networking, you will be able to find more info and diagrams than you could ever dream about reading.

Question 5

I have 4 gigabit-ready PC's and one 10/100 network connected printer.  Will the hub drive all ports at gigabit speed except the port connected to the printer? Or will it negotiate down to 100 for ALL ports ?

Accepted Answer

The hub auto-negotiates port speeds on a per port basis, therefore your gigabit PCs will communicate at gigabit ethernet speeds and only your fast ethernet printer (100 Mbps) will communicate at 100 Mbps.  The speeds will be indicated by a green light for 1000 Mbps and a yellow light for 10/100 Mbps.

are these stackable?

I would not recommend stacking without a spacer or shelf.  Typically you need to allow clearance top & rear (at least 1" would be safe) and sometimes around the sides, for proper heat dissipation. As far as weight, the manual does not recommend anything heavy on top but the units are very light and this shouldn't be an issue

Question 7

I have a Cat 5 cable running from my router to a room across the house.  I now need to add a 2nd device in that room, so I know I can add a switch in that room to connect more devices.  Here's my question.
If I replace my current 4-port router with a new/better one, can I use the old router in that room as a switch, to connect my 2 devices in that room to the new router?  Or will that jumble up the addresses/routing?

Yes and no. Most normal home routers are both a router and a switch. It has 2 routing interfaces 1 of which (in most cases) has 4 switch ports. If you disable the routing function of the old router you plan to use as a switch. Then yes just only use the 4 ports. However that said if you are not familiar with the gui, or do not want to read walk throughs on how to do this. You might be better off using this. In all honesty I really like this little switch. Considering it is unmanaged.

Does the TP-LINK TL-SG1008D have QoS?

Doesn't look like it and I wouldn't expect it to at this price range and being unmanaged.  If you go to the TP-Link site, you'll find that their managed & smart switches do.  Look at the specs for these units under "software features"

Question 9

What is the power supply voltage input?  I was considering buying one of these then splicing into one of the computer's power connectors to power the switch.  This will only work if it is 3.3,5 or 12 VDC.

I just get tired of all these black transformers stuck in my wall, and this will sit right next to my desktop computer.

the power adapter that came with it states 9V, 0.85A, so it's not obvious that your plan would work if you only have 3, 3.5 or 12V at your disposal.

Question 10

What is the power consumption of this device? How many watts will it draw under normal operation?

Switch is rated for 9V and 0.85A.  The real answer is it depends how many devices you have plugged into it and if they are all running a full load.

9 x 0.85 = 7.65 watts.  However, since you'll probably not be using every port nor have continuous full load, I'd cut that number in half (~4W) and that should be a reasonable estimate.
